HHS thinclads finish the season at state in Laurel

The Havre High track teams went to the Class A state meet with high hopes of finishing the season strong. And even though both Blue Pony squads didn’t score a lot of points, they finished on a high note all the same.

The big news to come out of the two-day state meet in Laurel for the Ponies, was Ivar Aageson, who won a state title in the 300 hurdles, to go along with a third-place finish in the 400 and a fifth in the long jump. Aageson scored all 18 points for the Havre boys, which finished 12th. The state title in boys went to Corvallis, which scored 79. Miles City was second with 62 and Sidney was third with 47. In the girls competition, Havre finished 19th, with just two points. Dillon won Class A with 59 points, followed by Belgrade and Miles City, which each had 50.

“With every kid that we took to state, we told them their goal should be to PR, place or win the whole thing,” HHS head coach John Ita said. “And I think that our kids did a great job. They told their goals to achieve and they went out and did it. Ivar had a fantastic meet, but all of the kids gave it everything they had and (we) as coaches were proud that of effort.”

Aageson got his state meet off to a strong start Friday, with a time of 51.03 in the 400-meters to take third, as well as a jump of 20-07.75 in the long jump, good enough for fifth. Then, Saturday, Aageson took home the gold, winning the 300 hurdles with a time of 39.92, beating out two other competitors by hundredths of a second.

Yet, Aageson was not the only Havre track athlete to have a hand in scoring some points. The Pony girls also got on the board, thanks to a solid performance in the 400-meter relay. After finishing sixth in the preliminary run Friday in Laurel, with a time of 51.11, the team of Kyndall Keller, Taylor Torgerson, Katie Wirtzberger and Jessa Chvilicek shaved nearly half a second off their time in order to record a 50.54 in the finals Saturday, giving them fifth place and the only two points of the meet for Havre.

“The girls relay as well with two freshman and two sophomores,” Ita said. “Getting fifth like that and running the best race that they have all season. They had perfect handoffs and I am really happy for those girls as well.”

The Ponies also had a number of other athletes in attendance such as Andrew Boucher, Dylan Chvilicek, Loy Waid, Loni Waid, Abby Morse, Ireland Coyne, Logan Huebsch, Gillian Dorrance and Grace Loftus, but none of them were able to crack the top six as individuals.

“I was proud of the kids,” Ita said. “They went out and they gave such great effort and that’s all we could ask from them.”
