Pony tracksters qualify for state in Glendive

The Havre High track teams both took part in the two-day Eastern A Divisional track meet in Glendive over the weekend and even though the Blue Ponies didn’t make a run at either team title, HHS got some kids on the podium and even more advanced to State A track.

In the girls meet, Laurel took home the team championship with 107 points, followed by Belgrade in second with 84 and Glendive in third with 68. Havre finished ninth with 31 points. On the boys side of things, Miles City ran away with the meet after posting 122 points. Laurel won a close race for second with 68 points, Sidney came in third with 62, edging out Lewistown, which finished with 61. The Havre boys finished last in the meet with 27 points, all of which were scored by senior Ivar Aageson.

While Aageson didn’t compete in the open 400-meter dash during the season, he finished one-tenth of a second away from winning a divisional title in the race, getting second with a time of 51.28. Jack Waddell of Lewistown beat out Aageson with a time of 51.27. Yet, the former state champion in the 1,600-meter relay was far from finished.

Aageson followed up his performance in the the 400 with a second-place finish in the 300 hurdles, thanks to a time of 40.41. After scoring 16 points in the 400 and 300 hurdles, Aageson added six more in the long jump, getting third (20-06.25) and also sharing third place in the high jump after a height of 5-08. Aageson wasn’t the only member of the Pony boys to make it to state. Andrew Boucher also made it in the 400 and in the discus, Dylan Chvilicek also qualified, as well as the boys 400-meter relay team.

“Ivar Aageson was the highlight of the meet for Havre,” HHS head coach John Ita said. “He had a really good meet and was in a couple of the most exciting. He got edged out in both, but he was in a couple of photo finishes in the 400 and the 300 hurdles.”

The Havre girls also racked up some points in Glendive over the two days, but the effort was much more spread out. The Ponies did get some significant points in the sprints as Loy Waid, a freshman, finished second in the 400, after running a 1:02.9. Katie Wirtzberger also scored in both the 200, finishing fifth (27.86), and the 400, finishing fourth (1:03).

The cause was also helped by a slew of seniors who found the podium for Havre as Logan Huebsch notched a fifth-place finish in the 300 hurdles (50.87) and Ireland Coyne was sixth in the 100 hurdles (16.79). In the discus, Gillian Dorrance earned some points after finishing sixth, following a throw of 100-09.

“Gillian doing what she did and getting on the podium was pretty special,” Ita said. “She wasn’t really even in the top-10. So that was unexpected and that was pretty special for her.”

Another highlight in the meet was when Sarah Faber and Jessa Chvilicek both made the podium in the high jump. Chvilicek was third and Faber finished fourth. That event and the 400, with Wirtzberger and Loy Waid both placing, were the two events where there were multiple Havre girls on the podium.

“That was really nice to see,” Ita said. “It was nice to see a couple of Havre girls up there for the high jump and the 400. That was another special moment for us. All in all, I think the coaches came away pretty happy.”

The Pony girls also had a number of others earn their way to the state meet, as Loni Waid punched her ticket following a seventh-place finish in the pole vault. Abbey Morse also qualified in the javelin, while Grace Loftus made it in the 400. Taylor Torgerson also made it to state in both of the relay events, along with Kyndall Keller who will run on the 400-relay team. The Class A state meet will be Friday and Saturday in Laurel.
