Northern C: Knights make history; Longhorns repeat

No matter the sport, the Northern C is always super competitive. But Thursday in Great Falls at the Northern C Divisional track meet, it was the District 9C and the North Star Knights who stole the show.

The North Star boys, who won the District 9C title last week in Havre for the fifth straight year, did something no boys athletics team has done since the inception of North Star and that's win a divisional championship. The Knights finished first with 82 points, beating Belt, which finished with 70 points, thanks to incredible efforts by Dylan Miller, Devon Miller and Caden Rettig. Turner finished third with 58 points.

"First boy's divisional title of any kind since North Star was formed in 2005-06," North Star head coach Brian Campbell said via his Twitter account Thursday night. "Third divisional track trophy, but first title. I am biased, but they are even better people than they are track athletes."

While the divisional championship was certainly a team effort, the Northern C Divisional trophy is going home to North Star for one reason, well three actually, as Dylan Miller, Devon Miller and Caden Rettig had a hand in every single point scored. Individually, each athlete stood out Thursday at Memorial Stadium, but Dylan Miller might have been the most impressive, finishing second in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes, as well as winning the triple jump (41-06). Yet, Rettig and Devon Miller were also determined to do their part, as both would join Dylan in finding the winner's circle.

Rettig got first place in the long jump (20-07), but also scored points and qualified for state in the triple jump, where he was third, as well as the pole vault and the 200. He was fifth in both events. Devon Miller also had an outstanding day, winning the javelin with a throw of 155-06, but also reaching state in the discus after placing fourth. He also notched a fourth-place showing in the 200 and a fifth in the 100.

Thursday was memorable for North Star, but it was also a historic day for the Turner boys, who followed last week's third-place showing at districts, by earning a third-place trophy at divisionals with 58 points. Eddie Harmon was a huge spark for the Tornadoes and he dominated Thursday, sweeping divisional titles in the 100 (11.57), 200 (23.30) and the 400 (51.13). Teammate Cody Welsh also won both the 110 (16.23) and 300 (41.55) hurdles, while also tying for second in the high jump.

On the girls side of things, Fort Benton flat out dominated, winning another Northern C championship with 171 points, 104 ahead of second-place Belt. Cascade finished third with 40. Fort Benton won more than half of the events, taking home nine individual titles and sweeping all three jumping events in the process.

Nicole Axtman won the high jump (5-00) and the triple jump (34-1). She was also a member of the first-place 400-meter relay that also included Maddy Thompson, Abby Clark and Gannon.

Gannon, a junior, took second in the 400, the 800 and the long jump, an event won by Thompson. The divisional title in pole vault also went to Fort Benton as McKenzie Clark (08-09) managed to find the top of the podium. Abby Clark, a freshman, did the same for the Longhorns in the 100 hurdles (16.89) and the 300 hurdles (47.93). Aspen Giese, another freshman, also won the 800 (2:25) and was third in the 400.

Other local standouts included Megan Molyneaux of Chinook, who finished second in both the 100 and 200. Janae West of North Star was second in the javelin and fifth in the pole vault.

The athletes who qualified Thursday at the Northern C or that pre-qualified for state earlier this season, will be back in action at Memorial Stadium in Great Falls May 25-26.
