After Mother’s Day
You know, Lord, even though Mother’s Day has just passed, we do thank You for our mothers. Some one said that “Like mother, like children.” We surely don’t have to look very far to see that that statement is true. You fully appreciate the influence of a Christian mother in molding of character in her children, Lord. Most noble characters and fine leaders of history have had good, God-fearing mothers. To name a couple: we’ve been told that George Washington’s mother was pious, and Sir Walter Scott’s mother was a lover of poetry and music. Of course, there are those at the other end of good patterns — showing a very bad example.
It’s fun to watch one little tot in church, like last Sunday. The music was great with a nice rhythm, we probably all felt like tapping our toes, but that little lad, probably about 3 years old, stepped a bit away from his mother’s side so he was in the aisle. “Mom” was tapping her foot, he tapped his feet right in time to the drum beat — that was special to watch. Other’s noticed him and soon, they too, were tapping their toes to the music.
We do know that the influence of a mother upon the lives of her children cannot be measured. They know and absorb her example and attitudes when it comes to questions of honesty, temperance, kindness and industry. We only have to look into our very own families and remember what and how our Mamma did a million different things, and surprise! We’re doing the very same thing our Mom did, right?
That reminds us of You Lord, for found in Proverbs 31:28: “Her children arise up and call her blessed …” There are many fine women in the world, and our Mom was one of the best.
Love, Mara
