Wardeen Kuenzel passed away Sunday, Dec. 10, 2017, in Billings.
A memorial service will be held for Wardeen at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2018, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Havre with interment at Highland Cemetery following the service.
Wardeen Westermann was born the second daughter of Walter and Arloiene Stallmacher Westermann Jan. 23, 1925, in Milbank, South Dakota. Not long after her birth, the family moved to Malta, Montana, and then a few years later to Havre. She graduated from Havre High School in 1943 and entered nursing school in Great Falls. While in school Wardeen became ill and was forced to quit. While in Great Falls she married Perry Brewer in 1946.
Perry was an airman and she followed him to air bases, many in Southern California, and they also spent a year in Japan, all with their son Richard in tow. Perry and Wardeen later divorced.
She returned to nursing school in Bozeman and graduated in 1955 and then returned to Havre. March 22, 1957, she married Kenneth Kuenzel. Kenny and Wardeen had two daughters, Lois and Connie.
Wardeen spent her career as a nurse. She worked in many departments including obstetrics (her favorite), the emergency room and then on to Family Planning; all the while raising her family and being a farm wife.
With a steadfast devotion to God, Wardeen was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. She served in many capacities including being a trustee and active in the LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League).
With Kenny’s passing in 2006 and declining eyesight, in 2008 she moved to Helena to be closer to Connie. She lived at the Eagles Manor and made many friends. In Helena she was a member of First Lutheran Church.
Then in 2016, Connie, husband Rick and Wardeen moved to Billings. Wardeen lived on her own for a while and in June of this year she moved to Gallagher’s Assisted Living, again making friends among the residents and staff. While in Billings she became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Wardeen was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Eileen Stier and Evelyn Smith; twin siblings, Donald and Dorothy, who died in infancy; and husband Kenny.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Darr Brewer, granddaughter Chelle Tichi, husband L.J., children, Nathan, Katelyn, Jordan and Christine, and grandchildren Matthew and Xander, grandson Scott Brewer and wife Lydia, all of South Dakota; daughter and son-in-law Lois and Dennis Jones of Puyallup, Washington; daughter and son-in-law Connie and Rick Deady of Billings, granddaughter Ashley Deady and R.J. Green of Missoula and grandson Ryan Deady and his wife Savannah of Wilsonville, Oregon; also many nieces, nephews and friends.
We would like to thank everyone for the kind words and prayers. Also heartfelt gratitude to Gallagher’s Assisted Living and the hospice folks of Senior Independent Living.
