Local News - Havre's Living History set for June 2

The Havre Area Chamber of Commerce’s Tourism Committee is offering people the opportunity to learn about Havre’s history by experiencing it. Havre locals will bring historical attractions to life for its annual Living History day Saturday, June 2.

People can tour the once grandest and largest military post in Montana and one of the largest in the U.S., Fort Assinniboine, from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. They can check out the display of hides and guns. Each hour a cannon shot will be fired by the Bullhook Bottoms Black Powder Club. People can grab lunch in the Historical Hop Room and take a special tour given on the Black Jack Wagon. A discounted rate of $5 per adult and $3 for 18 and younger is being offered for the day. A very special event is offered this year when, starting at 4 p.m., an Old-Time Dance will be held. Dinner and a no-host bar is offered while people learn dances from the past. Cost is $20 individual and $35 a couple.

Havre Beneath the Streets underground tours come to life on Living History Day. People taking the tour will see the Old West at its best in the Sporting Eagle Saloon, shop at Gourley Brothers Bakery and purchase a fresh, homemade pastry. A meat sample will be offered at Havre’s Meat Market as well as a choice of old-fashion penny candy available to buy at Holland and Son Mercantile. Saturday’s tours will start at 9 a.m., will run every half hour with the last tour at 4 p.m. Appointments for tours are welcomed. A special tour rate of $8 per person will be available.

The Wahkpa Chu’gn Buffalo Jump lets people take a walk back in history. The Wahkpa Chu’gn Buffalo Jump is a one-of-a-kind experience where people view artifacts in their natural state. The Buffalo Jump tours will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The H. Earl Clack Museum will bring history to life by re-creating heritage with hands-on events. This Hands On History event will be offered for free from 1 to 3 p.m. The museum will be open its regular hours from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The H. Earl Clack Museum is also a member of Montana’s Dinosaur Trail.

High Line Heritage House Museum is offering Hill County Women's History Among the Headstones tours, which will be given Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 6 p.m. People will meet at the Highland/Calvary cemetery. Should the weather not cooperate, Emily Mayer will be conducting tours of the High Line Heritage House Museum, 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., all three days. Cost for these tours are $10 for adults; $5 for children 6-12 and 5 and younger are free with accompanying adult.

The North Central Montana Everything Antique Show will run all weekend, free of charge, at the Great Northern Fairgrounds. Friday's hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday the Rolling Relic Parade will be 1 p.m. and a threshing demonstration at 2 p.m., both on the fairgrounds. Sunday will see a blacksmith Demonstration at 11 a.m. Along with the classic and antique cars, toys, kitchenware and tractors, and stationary and model engines, the 4-H Chuckwagon will be selling concessions.
