It was another busy weekend for local track athletes, as Havre High hosted the Havre Invitational Saturday, and a number of other local events were held, including the Jason Groseclose Memorial Track Meet, which took place in Rudyard last Monday.
With the end of the track season closing in, the Havre High track teams hosted their first and only home track meet of the year Saturday and fared well against Class C and Class B teams from along the Hi-Line. The highlight of the day, was the fact that the Havre girls were able to win their home meet, behind the strong performances of senior Logan Huebsch, who found the podium in both hurdle events, as well as strong performances by the Ponies in the jumping events, the sprints and the relays.
While the Havre boys were unable to come away with the team title, the Ponies did have some solid performances, led by Ivar Aageson, who found the podium in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, in addition to the long jump.
"Ivar had a really great day for us," HHS head coach John Ita said. "He really has had a great year for us. He has done a great job in the hurdles and has done a nice job in the long jump. He is where the majority of our points have come."
While most seasons, the Ponies take a week off before the divisional meet, with all the cancellations and postponements, Ita said things had to be adjusted a bit and now teams will head to Glendive to compete this weekend in a tuneup for the Eastern A Divisional meet also in Glendive May 19.
"Without those other meets, we just decided that we would go to Glendive," Ita said. "It will make it different, because when we come back, we are really going to have to rest them, instead of resting them for a week and then pushing them the week before divisionals. We will just have to rest them and see how it goes."
Many of the teams that competed in Havre Saturday, also took part in the Jason Groseclose Memorial Track Meet Monday in Rudyard. Chinook ended up winning the boys competition with 105 points, well clear of second-place Chester-Joplin-Inverness, which had 85.33. Big Sandy was third with 73. The girls title was won by North Star, which tallied 97 points, compared to 64 for second-place Turner. Big Sandy beat out Valier for fourth, 63-56.
The District 9C track meet will be held this Wednesday at the Havre Middle School track. Havre will also take part in its final preparation for divisionals as the Ponies will head to Glendive this week for the final meet of the regular season.
Note: Full results were not made available to the Havre Daily News by deadline for Monday's edition.
