Friendly and caring; kind and compassionate; dependable and creative; these were just a few words that were used to describe the recipients of the two large awards which highlighted the Havre Public Schools' Employee Recognition Celebration Tuesday night.
At the end of each school year the Board of Trustees and the Havre Public Schools Administration host a recognition celebration to honor not only employees and teachers for their length of tenure in the district, but also one classified employee and one teacher who has gone above and beyond and has exemplified the district motto of "A Tradition of Excellence."
The Classified Employee of the Year was awarded to Havre High School cook Patty Huestis, and Havre High School English teacher Mandy Nitz was named the Teacher of the Year.
2017-2018 Classified Employee of the Year Molly Baltrusch presented the award to Huestis. The fellow employees who nominated Huestis, Baltrusch said, described her as a caring and dependable person as well as "a joy to work with."
Huestis, who is a working mom of two kids, was also described as a problem solver who handled everything with a smile, Baltrusch said.
Huestis said she is very appreciative of receiving this award.
Havre High School math teacher Heather Haney, the past year's Teacher of the Year, presented the award to Nitz. She said that the other teachers who nominated Nitz said she is kind and compassionate to both students and colleagues and is good at keeping students engaged.
Haney said that Nitz's students described her as approachable, understanding and kind but firm.
Havre High School Principal Mike Haugen listened as Haney read a letter he wrote in which he said he often sees Nitz working before and after school with students and that she is a demanding and caring teacher.
"It has been an honor to work with her," Haugen said, "She is a person of the highest quality."
"I was pretty surprised," Nitz said about being presented with the award, "I am humbled."
