From Tee to Green
While flooding has been the talk of the start of the local golf season, temperatures have also finally warmed, and, area golf courses were full of golfers over the last weekend.
And that's great news, after a long, hard winter.
However, for the Montana State University-Northern golf teams, they traveled a long distance to finish their 2018-18 season.
The Lights and Skylights of head coach Dave Boles, were in Phoenix, Arizona, last week for the 2018 Frontier Conference Championships. It was tough going for the Northern teams because they weren't able to get on any golf courses in Havre prior to the three-day tournament in Arizona.
However, Northern's Jenna Jensen still managed an All-Conference finish for the Skylights. Jensen shot rounds of 85, 82 and 80 to finish in seventh place overall. The finish was the highest by a Northern woman at the Frontier tourney in quite some time. Overall, the Skylights placed sixth with a team total of 1,234. Rocky Mountain College finished first at 957. Northern's Megan Vandenacre finished 24th with a 297, while Diana Ball tied for 26th with a 307. Former Skylight basketball great Brandy Lambourne also made the trip with the team, and placed 29th, with a 383.
On the men's side, the Lights finished the Frontier tourney in sixth place with a 1,184. RMC was again the Frontier champion, coming in at 874. Devin Bray led the Lights with rounds of 85, 83 and 79 for a 247, which was 23rd overall. Jerod Boles finished in 26th place, while Ethan Partch was 28th and Trent Noel was 29th.
Meanwhile, the high school golf season is finally in a much better place than it was when the first day of spring sports rolled around. Chinook is getting plenty of tournament time recently, having played at Fort Benton over the weekend, as well as competing in Glasgow this afternoon. Chinook, under head coach Mike Seymour, has already qualified three girls for the Class C state tournament, which will be held in Anaconda May 14-16. Chinook is set to host its own invite on Saturday. Box Elder, Rocky Boy and other area Class B-C golf teams have also enjoyed the good change in the weather recently as well.
And speaking of beginnings, both at Prairie Farms Golf Course, and Beaver Creek Golf Course, men's league will finally tee off this week. At Prairie Farms, league golf begins tonight and Wednesday, while men's league starts at BCGC Thursday. League secrataries are reminded to please have your weekly results by Sunday of each week
And best of luck to all our league golfers.
