Track is Back: Longhorns, Eagles win long-awaited Cal Wearley

After getting postponed twice, the Cal Wearley track meet was finally held Wednesday in Havre and despite some winds and clouds, it turned out to be a nice day at the Havre Middle School track.

And while it was a nice day all around for the hundreds of athletes and 34 schools in attendance, when it came down to the boys track meet, the competition for the top spot was fought for tooth and nail. In the end, it came down to a single point, as Fairfield edged North Star for first place with 75 points. The Knights finished second with 74 and Fort Benton ended up getting third with 41.

When it came to the girls meet, it was clear early on who was going to win going away and that was Fort Benton, which cruised to the team title with 136 points. Havre was second with 79 and Cut Bank was third with 48.

"We just have so many athletes in different areas," Fort Benton's Leah Gannon said. "And we just have a great group of teammates. We just all push each other really hard. Some days when you really don't want to run, we all have to push each other to keep getting better and better."

While the girls meet was a runaway, the boys team competition was a battle between Fairfield and North Star, but one of the most interesting competitive battles on the track also took place between participants from those two teams, as both Devon and Dylan Miller of North Star went head-to-head with Dawson Allen of Fairfield. In the 100-meter dash, Allen got the better of Devon Miller, who finished second with a time of 11.6. Allen won the 100 after running an 11.3.

However, the 200 was a different story. Dylan Miller, who also took second in the 400 with a time of 53.2, finishing behind Allen in the preliminary heat of the 200. But later in the day, during the final, Miller beat the Fairfield runner, nudging him out for first place by one-tenth of a second. Miller unofficially ran a 23.0, while Dawson ran a 23.1.

"I saw how he ran before," Miller said. "So I was able to make a plan and was able to beat him."

Getting both first and second-place finishes are nothing new to Miller, who has gotten off to a torrid start this track season. Last weekend in Choteau, he won three events, as he excels in the long jump in addition to the sprinting events.

"We just try to work really hard all year round," Miller said. "We don't focus as much on track as we do basketball and stuff like that. But when the time comes we get pretty serious about it. I think we do a great job of working hard and working together as a team."

In addition to getting second in the 100, Devon Miller also finished second in the javelin with a throw of 144-07. He also finished third in the shot put and fifth in the discus. Yet, the Knights had more than just the two Miller brothers scoring points for them. Another standout performance came from Caden Rettig, who won the long jump after jumping 20-03. Rettig also got a second-place finish in the pole vault (11-00).

Fairfield was aided in its quest for the boys title with a strong day from Keeley Bake, who won the high jump and was third in the long jump. Fairfield also won the 400-meter relay. Other individual athletes who put together strong performances Wednesday, included Havre's Ivar Aageson, who won the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.6. Garrett Diekhans of Fort Benton won the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.2 and Trajan Hannum of Chinook also took home first in the 1,600, thanks to a time of 5:02. Jakob Keller of Havre finished second in the 3,200, while Cody Welsh matched him with a second place finish in the 100 hurdles (16.6). Welsh was also second in the 300 hurdles (42.6). Havre finished 10th in the meet with 19.5 points, while Chinook finished 11th with 19.

In terms of the girls athletes, many of the top performances came from Fort Benton, including Gannon, who won the 800 (2:29) and also finished second in the 400 (1:01). She also helped Fort Benton win both the 400-meter and 1,600-meter relays. She also took home the title in the long jump, finishing first with a jump of 16-06.

Gannon's teammate Abby Clark also had a stellar day. Clark won the 100 hurdles (17.1) and finished second in the 200. And joining Gannon on the podium in the jumps was Nicole Axtman, who won the triple jump (35-06). Axtman also finished third in the high jump.

Havre was led to a second-place finish thanks in part to a strong day from Jessa Chvilicek, who won the high jump (5-02), finishing just ahead of her teammate Sarah Faber, who took second with a jump of 5-00. Others local athletes that found the winner's circle Wednesday included L'Tia Lawrence of Harlem, who won both the 1,600 and 3,200 in the girls meet. She finished the 1,600 with a time of 5:51 and the 3,200 in 12:40. Rochelle Pease of Rocky Boy won the discus with a throw of 108-09.

In terms of team results, Chinook wound up sixth with 30 points. Harlem finished seventh with 20. Turner finished ninth with 16 and Rocky Boy was 13th with 11 points.

Area track teams will be back in action this weekend, including the Havre Blue Ponies traveling to Whitefish for the A.R.M. Invitational.
