After taking part in their first track meet of the season last Monday in Glasgow, the Havre High track teams made the trip to Belgrade Saturday to take part in the annual Gallatin Valley Invitational.
Unfortunately, against some very good competition from the western part of the state, the Blue Ponies struggled to score points. Huntley Project won the boys meet with a total of 69 points. Dillon was second with 57.7 and Laurel was third with 54.6. Havre finished 17th with two points. The girls title went to Belgrade after the Panthers picked up 72.8 points, finishing just ahead of second-place Dillon, which had 70 and third-place Lewistown, which finished with 57.6. Havre wound up 11th with a total of 14.3 points.
Logan Huebsch was the top point getter for the Pony girls, as she found the podium in both the 100 and 300-meter hurdles. Huebsch ran a 17.56 to finish fifth in the 100 hurdles, while also running a 51.50 in the 300 hurdles to get fourth. She was the only athlete on girls team to place twice, but she also wasn't the only Havre girl to find the podium. Katie Wirtzberger was another, after finishing sixth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:07. Sarah Faber had the highest finish, getting third in the high jump (5-0). Jessa Chvilicek finished fifth in the same event after a jump of 4-10. Loni Waid also finished sixth in the pole vault (8-00) and in the 1,600-meter relay, the Havre girls earned a sixth-place finish.
While the Ponies didn't have a lot of point getters Saturday, a number of others fell just short of placing, such as Taylor Torgerson, who was eighth in the 400 with a time of 1:08. Havre also had a couple of athletes come up just short in the throwing events, as Gillian Dorrance was eighth in the discus with a throw of 96-04. Her teammate Jordan Keith also finished ninth in the shot put with a toss of 30-00.25.
On the boys side of things for Havre, Ivar Aageson was the only Blue Pony to score points Saturday at the Gallatin Invitational. He put together a jump of 19-02, which was a personal best in order to secure fifth place in the long jump. He also finished seventh in the high jump with another personal best of 5-08. Andrew Boucher, who has been coming on in longer running events, put together a solid showing with a seventh-place in the 400-meter run with a time of 55.79.
The Ponies will be back in action Wednesday with the Cal Wearley track meet, which will feature a number of local teams from along the Hi-Line. The meet will be held the Havre Middle School track.
