For the second time in a month, Havre High junior Martin Wilkie was on one of amatuer wrestling's biggest stages at the high school level. And this past weekend, he brought home the gold.
Sunday in Reno, Nevada, Wilkie won the 132-pound high school championship at the Flo Reno Worlds. The event is one of the top amatuer, youth wrestling tournaments in the country, and Wilkie, who has won three consecutive Class A state champions for Havre, went through the draw perfect. In the championship match, he beat Washington 4A state champion Tanner Craig with a pin at the 1:21 mark.
Wilkie was part of a big Havre contingent in Reno. Sophomore Connor Harris finished an outstanding fourth, while fellow sophomores Cameron Pleninger and Marc Ramirez each brought home fifth-place finishes.
Other Havre grapplers to compete in Reno included, Riley Pleninger, Mick Chagnon, Orion Thivierge, Brayden Stadell, Lane Paulson and Quinn Reno. The squad was led by new HHS head coach Beau LaSalle.
