Did you know that you can require a debt collector to verify the debt they are contacting you about? If a debt collector is contacting you about a debt, you have the right to dispute that debt. If you dispute a debt, the debt collector must provide a written explanation of why they think you owe it. A debt collector must stop collecting a debt until they provide you with the verification. You can find a model debt dispute letter at MontanaLawHelp.org.
