Montana State University Extension is offering a tree care workshop Saturday starting at 9 a.m. at the Northern Agricultural Research Center on U.S. Highway 87 southwest of Havre. Specialists from the Schutter Diagnostic Lab will share their expert knowledge. Learn how to:
• Submit samples to MSU’s Schutter Lab for no cost;
• Identify tree varieties and which best to plant for your landscape;
• Manage for insects and disease;
• Proper plant techniques;
• Best tips and practices for pruning.
Workshop topics and timeline include:
9:15 a.m.: Laurie Kerziknic, MSU Extension specialist, arthropod diagnostician will discuss insects in the urban environment, when your trees are at risk and answer questions best management practices.
10:30 a.m.: Noelle Orloff will present “Identifying Montana’s Residential Trees.”
She believes the best way to take care of your trees is by learning key identification characteristics in order to care and maintain trees and prevent susceptibility to drought, insects and disease.
11:30 a.m.: Toby Day, MSU Extension horticulturist and master gardener specialist, will present two demonstrations on proper planting techniques and tips for pruning. His workshops may be outside, weather permitting, so participants will need to dress accordingly.
