Bread Show set with Montana Seed Show in Harlem

Spring is almost in sight, and with it comes the Montana Seed Show in Harlem.

Show dates are March 8-10 at Harlem High School. The Bread Show entry date is Friday, March 9, between 8 and 9:30 a.m. at the school’s big gym.

Categories (youth and adult) are: white bread, 100 percent whole wheat bread, machine white bread and machine 50 percent combination whole wheat bread. Prizes are awarded in each category. Adult first place winners may not enter that category for three years, but are eligible to enter the other categories. Youth winners may enter each year.

Breads should be entered in a large reclosable or a large twist tied plastic bag with recipe included (in a small baggie).

All breads will be auctioned at the Show. If you have questions, contact bread chairman Karolee Cronk at 353-2874. Come enter your bread and enjoy all the things that the Seed Show has to offer.

Whole wheat bread

2 pkg. yeast

1 1\2 cups warm water

5 T. honey\molasses

4 3\4—5 1\4 cups whole wheat flour

1\4 cup butter, melted

2 tsp. salt

2 lg. eggs

Combine yeast, water and 1 T. honey and let stand about 5 minutes. Add 1 1\2 cups flour and blend. Let stand, covered, in a warm place until doubled, 20-30 minutes. Stir in butter, remaining 1\4 cup honey, salt and eggs. Add 2 cups flour and thoroughly beat. Add another 1 1\4 cups flour. Let rise for about 1 hour. Knead, place in 2 pans and let rise again until almost doubled, 20-30 minutes. Bake at 375 for 35-40 minutes.
