Water main break in Rudyard leaves town dry, closes school

Everyone in the town of Rudyard remains without water today and likely into Thursday after a water main break Monday cut off the area’s water source.

The break has left the town’s approximate 200 residents without water. Reason for the break is undetermined, Hill County Commissioner and Rudyard resident Mike Wendland said this morning.

The ground is so frozen it took C & C Excavation Inc. hours Monday to get a foot into the ground, Wendland said. The digging will likely continue into tomorrow as the crew tries to find and repair the break, which is being worked near the railroad track by Wells Fargo and Farmer’s Union store.

“They’re still trying to get to it,” Wendland said.

Some neighbors north of town have offered to let in-town residents come in and get water from their homes to take care of basic necessities, Wendland said.

Due to the break, North Star middle and high school students have no school today in Rudyard.

A message linked to the North Star school calender says: “If this situation continues, the school will plan on resuming Wednesday and Thursday, and will make plans to have minimal water available to allow the school to function. If school is canceled at the (junior and high schools), there will still be school at the elementary in Gildford for grades K-6. This post will be updated as information becomes available.”
