Who are you?
You know, Lord, re-reading a blurb from way back, our first astronauts, while being trained for that moon flight, were required to give 20 answers to the query, “Who are you?” If we took the same test ourselves, and ran out of things to add to that list, we might ask ourselves if we had truly answered the question.
A friend shared that while browsing through some books at the library, she ran across some e. e. cummings poetry — Edward Estlin “E. E.” Cummings. 1894 — 1962. A friend had told her about his poetry some years back. She was surprised to read one of his quotes: “It takes courage to grow up and be who you really are!”
She said she’d had to give that some serious thought, as to who she really was. We all seek heroes and try to imitate others, to paste bits and pieces of other people on ourselves. Part of this process is natural for we do learn by imitating others. She’d finally understood that all God ever wanted her to be was just to be herself. She said that was both humbling and nearly unfathomable but the good news, though hard for her (or any of us) to accept, was that God created her — and us — to just be our best self. That is who we are!
So, who are we? Do we really know who we are, we might ask ourselves? Consider this: There are three of you. There is the person you think you are. There is the person others think you are. There is the person God knows you are and can be through Christ.
Reading Psalm 139: 13-14: “For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You for I am fearfully and wonderfully made!” Thank You, Lord!
