News you can use
Editor,
Being a long-time Havre resident and a retired school teacher, I read with interest your recent article about the Havre Public Schools potential plans for reconfiguring the schools.
I feel the school board should be commended for being proactive in their planning; it just makes sense to do that hard thinking and positing before the time to move forward arrives.
I realize that the article contained ideas, with nothing set in stone, as was said, this is the time to get everything out for discussion. Some of the ideas are better than others.
Regardless of what the final configuration looks like, I urge the board to go ahead and install an elevator in Lincoln-McKinley Primary School now. Whatever the cost is, it will only increase with the passage of time.
I have a concern with two of the proposals. First, to house the alternative school with the kindergarten children. This is not a good mix. There has got to be a better way to accommodate these two very diverse groups of students. Also, I could not support placing fifth-graders at the Havre Middle School. Fifth-graders are still young children. Their needs as learners and as individuals are quite different from those of traditional middle school youth.
The guiding principle behind the reconfiguration should be what’s best for our children. I urge the board to keep that in mind as they go forward in their planning. At some point I’m sure teachers and parents will be involved in these discussions. Hopefully, their input will be carefully weighed and considered.
