Havre High wrestling coach Scott Filius has won just about every tournament and award imaginable for a coach, so it was no surprise the see the long-time head man of the Blue Ponies nominated for another honor this week.
Filius, who has directed Blue Pony wrestling to five consecutive Class A state championships, was among 14 Montana high school coaches and athletic directors nominated for the National High School Coaches Association Coaches/Athletic Director of the Year award. Joining Filius on the list of 14 was Havre High activities director Dennis Murphy, who has been in that position since the early 2000s.
During his two decades coaching the Ponies, Filius has been at the helm for 12 Class A state championships. His 12 titles coaching ties him with Jug Beck for second in the history of the MHSA. He trails only Jim Street of Butte High, who won 15 state titles during his tenure with the Bulldogs.
While Filius has had tremendous success coaching, Murphy, as the athletic director has also overseen a number of success programs. During his time, Havre has won state championships in wrestling, football, girls basketball, tennis and swimming.
The award will be announced June 27 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
