With every passing week, the girls high school basketball season gets closer to district tournaments. So, needless to say, the last week of January was a big one.
The action on the Hi-Line started last Tuesday where the Big Sandy Pioneers picked up their first win of the season, defeating Hays-Lodge Pole at home. The Pioneers were hot from start to finish in a thrilling, 50-39 win over the Thunderbirds.
Meanwhile, the District 9C's top two teams were in action Friday night, and Fort Benton did what it needed to do to keep pace, as the Longhorns won at North Star 55-34. The Knights jumped out to a 13-10 lead, but Fort Benton outscored North Star 31-13 in the second half for the lopsided win. Aspen Giese scored a game-high 20 points for the Longhorns, while Leah Gannon added 15. Kate Hansen paced the Knights with 16 points.
Box Elder easily stayed undefeated Friday night, as the Bears clobbered Geraldine-Highwood 68-32 at home. Box Elder opened the game on a 20-6 run and got 24 points and 17 rebounds from Cecilia Vielle. Joelnell Momberg added 18, and Lilly Gopher scored 11 for the Bears.
Turner also played a non-conference game Friday night, and the Tornadoes got back into the win column with a 58-35 victory at Dodson. Turner went on a 21-9 run in the second quarter to pull away. Shyan Krass led all scorers with 17 points, while Sarah Billmayer added 14 for the Tornadoes.
The Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks have been a team on the rise this season, and they got their weekend started with a big, 47-40 win over Chinook Friday night. It was the start of a big weekend for the Hawks, who have surged to third place in the 9C standings.
Big Sandy's momentum meanwhile, didn't last. Friday, the Pioneers were downed in a non-conference game at Denton-Geyser-Stanford,, 46-27.
Harlem showed no signs of slowing down Friday night. The Wildcats knocked off District 1B rival Cut Bank 69-60. But the win didn't come easy as the Wolves led 25-28 at the break and still had the lead in the fourth quarter. But Harlem scored a 22-6 run in the final eight minutes for the win. Skylee Dirden poured in 26 points for Harlem while teammate L'Tia Lawrence added 20.
Harlem also had a big showdown Saturday. Not only were the Wildcats playing a rivalry game against Rocky Boy, it was also a meeting of perhaps the two best teams in the Northern B. But even on the road, the Wildcats kept their momentum going with a 69-55 win over the Morning Stars.
Harlem had a great first quarter, building a 16-7 lead, and the Wildcats were never really threatened. Mystic Striker scored a game-high 23 points for Harlem, but L'Tia Lawrence and Skylee Dirden each added 16. Jaylynn Mitchell poured in 19 for the Morning Stars and Adrienne Gopher added 15.
Fort Benton stepped up to the Class B ranks Saturday night, and the Conrad Cowgirls were no match for the Class C Longhorns. In Fort Benton, the Longhorns win 55-34. Twelve different players scored for Fort Benton, with Aspen Giese and Leah Gannon combining for 23 points.
Back in the 9C Saturday, Box Elder swamped Chinook 88-35 in Box Elder, behind 27 points for Lilly Gopher. Cecilia Vielle added 19 points, while Maddie Wolf Chief scored 15. Sierra Swank paced the Sugarbeeters with 11.
The Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks also got a big 9C win Saturday, beating Turner 36-29 on the road. CJI used a 15-point third quarter to get a lead and then hold on down the stretch. Peyton Hawks had a big game with 19 points for the Hawks, while Sarah Billmayer scored nine for the Tornadoes.
North Star also continued its strong recent play with a 44-31 win over improving HLP Saturday night in Hays. The Knights led 20-11 at halftime, then held off a strong rally from the Thunderbirds in the fourth quarter. Kate Hansen scored 11 points for the Knights, while Mulleah Stiffarm scored 11 for HLP.
