Organizers are holding a Pizza Hut event Thursday to raise prize money for the Lathine Windyboy Memorial Basketball Tournament, dedicated to a 22-year-old Rocky Boy man who died in a crash in 2014.
Windyboy liked basketball a lot. His favorite team was the Los Angeles Lakers, fundraising organizer Vina Sunchild said Monday. She, along with Windyboy’s family members, have been putting on a memorial tournament for the last three years. The tournament was prompted by Windyboy’s father, Kenny Parisian, Windyboy said.
The first two years of the tournament, it was held in the Box Elder school gym, and last year at the Chippewa Cree Wellness Center. About 10 teams a year have participated in the five-on-five tournament.
This will be the last year for the tournament, Sunchild said.
“We just wanna make this last year the best tournament for him,” she said.
This year the tournament will be held July 20 to 22. The location is still being decided, either in the Box Elder school gymnasium, or the Chippewa Cree Wellness Center.
Winners will be awarded cash, as well as apparel, prizes, Sunchild said.
In Thursday’s Pizza Hut fundraiser, when people making a purchase say they are donating to the Lathine Windyboy Memorial Basketball Tournament, 20 percent of the purchase price will go to the fundraiser.
