The high school basketball season is starting to hit the stretch run and that makes every game more intense. Of course, with so many good teams on the Hi-Line, every girls basketball game this season already seems intense.
Last week's action started with an intense game in Chinook, as the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds upset the Chinook Sugarbeeters in a District 9C battle Thursday night. The T-Birds erased a four-point fourth quarter deficit to beat the Beeters 37-36.
Mulleah Stiffarm was amazing for the T-Birds, scoring 28 points in the win, while Hailey McMaster scored eight for Chinook.
Of course, two teams who have been playing well all season are the Harlem Wildcats and Rocky Boy Morning Stars, and both scored big wins Friday night.
Harlem went on the road to Malta, and beat the M-Ettes for the second time this winter. The Wildcats led Malta 34-21 at the end of three quarters, then held off the M-Ettes for a 38-32 victory. Autumn Eagleman scored 12 points for the Wildcats, while L'Tia Lawrence chipped in with 11.
Rocky Boy got a big district win Friday night, too, as the Morning Stars took care of Shelby 74-58. Rocky Boy scored 20 points in the first quarter and 25 in the second and never looked back from there. Adrienne Gopher pumped in a game-high 24 points for the Morning Stars, while Jaynah Gopher scored 17 and Sasha Coffee added 15.
Box Elder showed no signs of slowing down Friday either. At home, the Bears crushed Chester-Joplin-Inverness, 88-43. Box Elder stayed unbeaten behind 26 points from Ceceila Vielle and another 22 from Lilly Gopher. Kristina Dahinden scored 14 points for the Hawks in the loss.
In a key game in the 9C Friday night, North Star went to Turner and held the third-place Tornadoes to just 34 points in a 44-34 victory. The Knights trailed 24-11 at halftime but came roaring back for the win.
Kate Hansen scored 14 points, while Lily Pedersen and Peytan King added 10 apiece for the Knights. Sarah Billmayer and Raegan Conlan combined for 16 points for the Tornadoes.
It was yet another big weekend for the Fort Benton Longhorns as well. On Friday night, Fort Benton rolled up to Big Sandy and came away with a 65-12 victory over the Pioneers. And Saturday night, the Longhorns handed Turner its second straight loss. At home, the Longhorns cruised to a 66-41 win over the Tornadoes. McKenzie Clark and Aspen Giese each scored 14 points for the Longhorns, while Leah Gannon added 13. Shyan Krass scored 13 for Turner.
Box Elder continued to dominate as well. Saturday, the Bears were home to take on North Star and the Knights were no match, as Box Elder ran away with a 75-24 win. A 26-3 run in the second quarter was more than enough for the Bears to pull away.
Ceceila Vielle had her second straight big game with 21 points, while Lilly Gopher scored 14, Maddie Wolf Chief had 11 and Eve The Boy and Joelnell Momberg each scored 10. Paij Peterson and Katelin Harvey scored six each for the Knights.
CJI got back in the 9C win column Saturday night with a dominating performance against Hays-Lodge Pole, winning 67-42.
Chinook also got back to its winning ways Saturday night, with a 41-20 road win in Big Sandy.
And yet again, Saturday night was a big night for area Class B teams, especially Rocky Boy. Earlier this season, the Morning Stars lost to defending state champion Fairfield by one point, but Saturday night in Fairfield, Rocky Boy crushed the Eagles 71-48. The Morning Stars led wire-to-wire in what was perhaps their biggest win in a long time. It also gave them sole possession of first place in the 1B standings. Jaylynn Mitchell scored 17 points, and Sean Henry added 14 for Rocky Boy. Rochelle Pease, Sasha Coffee and Adrienne Gopher each scored 12 as well.
Harlem kept its 2B winning streak alive with another thriller Saturday night. Trailing rival Wolf Point 38-32 in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats finished the game on an 11-2 run to win 41-40. L'Tia Lawrence and Dayton Healy led Harlem with 11 points each.
