It was another important week for local high school boys basketball as two of the top teams in the District 9C did battle last Thursday.
Chinook and Hays-Lodge Pole, both 9C contenders, met for the second time this season and for the second time, Chinook rolled to victory. The Beeters won 72-44, handing the Thunderbirds their second loss in district play.
It turned out to be a busy week for the T-Birds, who also played and beat Big Sandy Monday, 89-55. HLP also played Saturday against Chester and earned a home win over the Hawks 78-57. Chance Main scored 26 points to lead the T-Birds in the win. Spencer Richter scored 15 for CJI. Tyler Wanken also pitched in with 15. HLP is now 7-2 in the district, tied with North Star for second place.
After beating the T-Birds Thursday, Chinook welcomed Big Sandy to its gym Saturday night, hoping to keep its unbeaten mark alive in the 9C. And after a 26-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, as well as a 46 --17 lead at halftime, the Sugarbeeters cruised to a 71-27 win over the Pioneers. Isaac Bell led the way for Chinook with 17 points; Cord Schneider added 15 and Riley Kellam finished with 14. Ryan Roth had nine for the Pioneers. Chinook is 11-1 overall and 9-0 in the 9C, holding a two-game lead for first.
The rest of the 9C hit the ground running Friday night and before losing to HLP, CJI earned a home win over Box Elder, 49-38. Evan Dahinden managed a team-high 14 points for the Hawks. Wanken added nine and Richter had seven.
