Ponies succeed at Jug Beck once again

The Havre High wrestling team always looks forward to the challenge provided by the Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic and this past weekend in Missoula, the Blue Ponies once again showed their ability to thrive. Not only under pressure, but against some of the best wrestlers in the region.

Without a full lineup, including 2017 state champion Quinn Reno, the Ponies still managed to place eight wrestlers in what is considered the toughest prep tournament in Montana each year. Havre also crowned one champion, Martin Wilkie, as HHS racked up 200 total points, which was good enough to finish second. Class AA Bozeman won the tournament with 238 points. Mead High was third with 190.5 and fourth place went to Kalispell, another power in Class AA, with 182.5. Lewistown was the closest Class A team to Havre. The Eagles scored 111.5 to finished eighth.

“The kids wrestled lights out,” HHS head coach Scott Filius said. “We didn’t leave much on the table.”

Wilkie, who won the individual title at 138 pounds for Havre, was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler. On his path to the title, Wilkie had to win five matches and won all of them by pin, technical fall or major decision. He opened the tournament with a pin over Jarod Farrier of Polson in 1:27, followed by a another against Keaton Potter of Lewistown in 3:04. In the quarterfinals, Wilkie won a 12-2 decision over Brock Rodrigues of Bozeman.

The junior then finished off his championship by knocking off Devin Crawford of Helena in the semis and Reese Karst of Powell in the championship. Wilkie won both matches by tech fall.

“Martin, he majored, teched or pinned everybody,” Filius said. “It was just a really dominant performance. He is wrestling as well as he has in the last two years and these past two years, he has wrestled pretty well.”

Joining Wilkie in the finals Saturday, was senior Tyler Schaub, who ended up second at 205 pounds. The match for first was an absolute battle with Hunter Gregerson of University High, but ultimately, Gregerson won via an 8-7 decision. Dionne, a sophomore, also had an impressive tournament, knocking off Landon Farrar of Lewistown, Tim Carvey of Libby and Garrett Rieke of Kalispell before falling to Jordan Komac of Great Falls in the 160-pound final. Dionne was pinned at the 5:21 mark.

“Mason has been competing really well all season, so it’s not really a surprise to see him do well,” Filius said. “Mason and Tyler both have been getting better every week out. We are getting really consistent performances from those two.”

The Ponies also got fourth-place finishes from Ryan Stewart (120 pounds), Lane Paulson (132 pounds) and Connor Harris (152 pounds). Freshman Mick Chagnon continued his impressive season, finishing fifth for the Ponies at 103 pounds. He also avenged his loss in the tournament, which came in the quarterfinals to Eli Warner of Frenchtown. Warner won the first match 8-3. Then, when the two wrestled for fifth, Chagnon pinned him in 1:48.

HHS sophomore Cameron Pleninger also finished fifth at 113 pounds, while Marc Ramirez was sixth at 126 pounds. Austin Ratliff also pitched in with eight points thanks to a couple wins in the heavyweight class.

Havre will be back in action next Friday and Saturday with the Class A Duals in Lewistown.
