Hi-Line Girls Roundup: Harlem, Turner, CJI among local teams on a roll right now

High school girls basketball returned to the forefront over the weekend, as teams began the 2018 portion of their season. And, as expected, it was an exciting week.

Harlem has been rolling so far this season, and the Wildcats showed no signs of rust Thursday night, as they throttled former District 2B rival Chinook, 50-17. The Wildcats started the game on an 18-2 run. L'Tia Lawrence and Mystic Striker combined for 26 points for the Wildcats, while Kourtney Hanson scored five for the Sugarbeeters.

Another team that's been almost impossible to slow down so far this season is Box Elder, and Big Sandy couldn't do it Thursday night. On the road, the Bears beat the Pioneers 75-27, with Lilly Gopher pouring in 23 points, and Cecilla Vielle adding 16. Callie Demontiney had a big game for the Pioneers, with 15 points.

Friday night, Box Elder moved on to a much-anticipated showdown with the Fort Benton Longhorns. Both teams came in unbeaten, but in Fort Benton's gym, the Bears steam rolled their way to a 68-47 victory. Fort Benton hung tough early, but Box Elder closed the first half on a 15-6 run, and the Longhorns never threatened again.

Gopher scored 14 points for the Bears, while Joelnell Momberg added 11. Gabi Mollinario scored 12 for the Longhorns, who dropped their first 9C game of the year.

Staying in the 9C Friday night, the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks continued their strong start with a 45-36 win over rival North Star in Chester. The Hawks led 27-16 at the break, then held the Knights off in the second half. Kendahl Knapton led three Hawks in double figures with 16 points. Korrin Harmon added 12, as did Peyton Hawks. Peytan King scored 10 points for North Star.

Friday night also saw Turner keep moving forward with a 54-42 win over Hays-Lodge Pole, while Harlem dominated Glasgow 63-33 behind 18 points from L'Tia Lawrence.

Back in the Class B ranks, it was another good weekend for the Rocky Boy Morning Stars. Friday night, Rocky Boy took down Malta 61-50. The Morning Stars used an 18-7 run in the third quarter to pull ahead and got 18 points from Sean Henry and 15 by Adrienne Gopher.

Saturday night, Rocky Boy scored a big District 1B win, as the Morning Stars dominated Choteau 59-42. Rocky Boy started the game on a 17-2 run, and Adrienne Gopher poured in a game-high 21 points.

Saturday night also saw another full slate of 9C action, including Turner scoring yet another big win. The Tornadoes thumped Chinook 58-33, after outscoring the Beeters 44-16 in the first half. Sarah Billmayer led the Tornadoes with 15 points, while Shyan Krass had 13 and Raegan Conlan added 10. Kourtney Hanson paced the Beeters with 10 points.

North Star got a bounce-back win Saturday, as the Knights throttled Big Sandy 45-4. The Pioneers were held scoreless in the second half, with Jaylyn Cline scoring all four points. The Knights had 10 different players score, with Kate Hansen putting up a game-high 10 points.

Fort Benton also rebounded from its loss to Box Elder with a 74-34 rout of Hays-Lodge Pole Saturday night, while CJI stepped out of conference play and beat Class B Cut Bank 49-43.
