The Christmas break was a long one for the Havre High boys and girls swim teams. But Saturday, the Blue Ponies finally got back in the water.
Having not swum a competitive meet since Dec. 16, Havre traveled to Hardin Saturday for the annual Class A Meet, which rotates between Havre and Hardin.
"Both of our teams swam well, but our boys team is just so shorthanded that we just don’t have enough depth to score enough points to keep up with the bigger teams," HHS head coach Bill Kilgore said.
And it was a good showing by the Blue Ponies, especially the powerful Havre High girls, who came up just three points shy of beating powerhouse Billings Central. The Ponies scored 174 points, while the Rams scored 177. Hardin was third.
Individually, the Pony girls got another strong showing from senior Amelia Miller, who won 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle. In the 200 IM, Miller finished with a time of 2:25.84, while Megan Miller finished third. In the 500 free, she won in a time of 5:43.95, with Aria Pratt finishing fifth and Blakely Lines placing sixth.
Freshman Kobi Burchard also continued to impress for the Pony girls. Burchard won the 100 butterfly in 1:10.72, with teammate Jessica Otto finishing fourth. Burchard came back to finish second in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.61), while Megan Miller was sixth. Hannah Lunak scored big points for HHS, as well, finishing second in the 100 free (1:04.14), and third in the 100 backstroke. Jillian Reighard placed third in the 100 free and third in the 200 free, while Morgan Flammond was fifth in the 100 backstroke.
Lacey Huseby added a fourth-place finish in the 200 free, while Otto was sixth, and Huseby also finished sixth in the 100 free. Havre also took first in the 400 free relay with a time of 4:21.65, while the B team was third and the C team was sixth. The Ponies also got a second in the 200 medley relay and a third in the 200 free relay.
"The girls team was just three points from winning the meet against a very tough Billings Central team and swam their hearts out," Kilgore said. "We just came up a little bit short this time. Coach Cammon and I will go back and study the events and results to try to put together a stronger lineup next time, and the swimmers will keep working hard to drop time and move up in the standings. It was a tough loss, but these kids are determined to be successful and won’t be held down."
There were plenty of good swims by the Pony boys Saturday as well. Havre finished third with 122 points, while Billings Central beat out Hardin for first. But individually, HHS was strong.
Jacob Miller finished second in the 200 free with a time of 2:08.39, while Paxtin McCann was fifth. Miller also swam to a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:06.33, while Christian Mathis was right behind him in third.
Other top performances by the Ponies included, John Klein placing second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:43.73. Klein would add a third-place finish in the 100 free, while Aylan Pratt placed fourth in that race and third in the 100 breaststroke. Ammon Lines added a third-place finishes in the 50 free and a fourth in the 500 free, while Noah Gjesdal was sixth in the 100 butterfly.
In the relays, Havre was second in the 200 medley with a time of 2:04.59, third in the 200 free and third in the 400 free.
"I’m very proud of the effort from the boys and girls teams, especially our newer swimmers who scored some very important points from a depth standpoint," Kilgore noted.
The Ponies will be back in the pool Saturday when they have a meet with GFH and CMR in Great Falls.
