Hill County 4-H'er takes sixth in state

From Hill County Extension

Amelia Beard, a second-year Hill County 4-H'er, placed sixth in the Montana Swine Symbol of Excellence carcass competition.

Beard's hog competed in the "light" Symbol of Excellence category.  Amelia's hog breeder was Habets Show Pigs from Ledger.

Beard is the daughter of Holly Beard.

The Montana Swine Symbol of Excellence carcass competition saw 1,520 hogs that competed in t this year. From that total 221 met the standards to receive Symbol of Excellence.

The Symbol of Excellence program was initiated in 1984 as a joint effort between the Montana Pork Producers Council and MSU Extension as a means of recognizing youth and swine breeders who select and raise market hogs that meet carcass merit standards and who demonstrate a commitment to excellence in producing quality pork products.

The Symbol of Excellence standards are based upon live weight, hot carcass weight, back fat, loin area, marbling, color, wetness, and firmness.
