Share your good fortune
You know, Lord, as we rush about, this article seemed timely. Ruth C. Ikerman wrote this many years ago, entitled, “Do What You Don’t Have to Do.”
“A friend who thoroughly enjoys each new Christmas season once told me in a moment of fellowship that rich secret of her perennial enjoyment,
“Do what you have to do for Christmas first of all and get it out of the way. Then you can do what you don’t have to do. Therein lies the real meaning of Christmas, and it provides fun for all the year.”
Her philosophy explained how she was able to accomplish so much in the way of helping charitable organizations and doing little kindnesses for neighbors and friends.
“You know Christmas is coming in December, so why not get organized fairly early on the usual items, such as taking advantage of summer sales for family gifts. It you bake a family fruitcake, bake it early — then your kitchen is free to do what you don’t have to do.” Then you can bake for others. Share your good fortune.
Do something for yourself that you don’t have to do. Our friend enjoyed the musical affairs so was now able to attend. “It’s amazing what’s available, often without cost, if you just look for it, and can arrange to get there.”
By getting gift-buying and wrapping out of the way early, one could help wrap gifts for children in needy families. Check with your church or a local agency. Helping out doesn’t cost a single penny.
If you are tired of seasonal monotony and being bogged down with details, do a little planning this Christmas, to give yourself and others the glad gift of the unexpected.
It’s already December but while we share, Lord, help us remember 1 Cor. 14:1 “Let love be your greatest aim … .”
