HHS donates turkeys for holiday

Four Havre High School students, aided by the school athletics director, showed up to the Havre Food Bank, just half an hour before noon Thursday, and unloaded 48 turkeys.

"It's about the kids giving back," Havre High School Athletics Director Murphy said, while en route to the turkey storage area in the Food Bank, a box of turkeys in his arms.

"It's our way of saying thank you to our community for supporting us, we'll support them a little bit during the holiday season," Murphy added.

The donated turkeys were a result of a turkey challenge between various athletic teams, clubs and activities being asked to donate to the food bank.

The turkeys were bought fresh from Gary & Leo's Fresh Foods.

This isn't the first time Havre High students have donated turkeys, Murphy said. Although last year "snuck up on us" and the turkey giveaway didn't happen, it's happened in past years, sometimes just in time for Christmas.

The students - Tommy Brown, Olivia Bischoff, Kadia Miller and Emily Borst - each represented a different aspect of athletics - basketball, cross-country running, cheerleading and track and field.

"It's better to help when you can," Borst said.

Bischoff said she likes the idea of helping out some of the fellow students she sees in the hallways at school.

Food bank manager Lorna Bjerga has said demand for food climbs up in winter months. A part of the usual rise is that there are people more likely to get laid off in the winter. The number of clients needing food has recently risen, Bjerga has said.

Over the years, the food bank has made and distributed food baskets during Thanksgiving and Christmas season. Bjerga has said that about 160 households a month make use of the food bank regularly.

People whose household needs help must fill out an application, available at the food bank. They need to present a current photo ID, birth certificates or Social Security card for every member of their household and proof of address in the form of a piece of recent mail such as a utility bill. Proof of income should also be made available.

Those eligible for assistance receive a box every two months with a fixed amount of nonperishable food items and ingredients to make certain meals.
