Havre area Special Olympic athletes will spend, starting today, three days in the Helena region, where they will participate in the 2017 fall games State Basketball Tournament.
About 13 athletes departed this morning at about 8:30 and some are scheduled to take the court twice Friday, Special Olympics Area Director Dave Carlson said Wednesday.
Havre's athletes will play five-on-five basketball as well as take part in individual competitions that include shooting, passing and dribbling. Friday's games will be against teams from Bozeman and Great Falls, Carlson said.
The tournament extravaganza will begin with an opening ceremony tonight. Events will be spread out in Helena, Clancy and Montana City, where nearly 40 delegations from across Montana are coming together to compete.
Included in the three-day affair will be a carnival-dance Friday night at the Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds. Carlson said the athletes said they hoped a disc jockey will provide the music, but that he would prefer a live band.
Although he resigned as the area director last year, Carlson said he is still functioning as one until a replacement is found. Leaving the position without a replacement could have meant the athletes would not have been able to attend this week's event, he said.
