After going winless at the Electric City Tournament, the Havre High volleyball team was looking to get back into the win column and Saturday night in Conrad, the Blue Ponies did just that.
In a non-conference matchup, Havre took care of the Conrad Cowgirls in straight sets, winning the match by the scores of 25-19, 25-21 and 25-15.
HHS will be at home this week for the first time this season, hosting Browning Friday night and Cut Bank Saturday. Both matches will be played inside the HHS gymnasium.
“It went well. We started out pretty slow, we need to work on our excitement, so that will be our next thing,” HHS head coach Tamecia Jarvis said. “But we hit in the positive and Logan Huebsch really stepped up, so that was awesome.”
As far as Conrad was concerned, the Ponies were able to put forth a strong offensive effort that included 31 kills and 10 aces. Havre also notched two blocks, 26 assists and 31 digs in the straight-set victory. The Ponies were also stellar defensively, as they limited the Cowgirls to just 13 kills and zero aces.
“I thought that we did a good job defensively,” Jarvis said. “
The first sets were fairly close and competitive, as Havre won game on 25-19 and game two 25-21. In the third game, however, the Ponies won by double digits, besting Conrad 25-15 to wrap up the match.
In terms of hitting the ball, no Havre player had a better night than Logan Huebsch, who notched a match-high of 11 kills.
Jessa Chvilicek also had an impressive night, finishing the match with seven kills and 1.5 blocks. Sam Oliver also contributed in a number of different ways for the Ponies. She finished the match with five aces, 24 assists and eight digs. Emilee Cariveau also pitched in with five kills, while Alex and Katie Donaldson both added eight digs in a strong defensive effort.
“Logan hit the ball really well,” Jarvis said, “but so did some of our other hitters. Jessa hit really well and had seven kills and only one error, and that’s a good thing when you are getting more kills than errors when you are hitting. I would like to see us increase the digs on our side of the court, but they were not a big hitting team. They did not get a lot of kills. It was mostly stuff that our blocks were able to get a hand on, but that’s something that we need to touch up. We do need to see more digs, so defense is definitely something that we need to work on more this week.”
Havre (1-2) will delve back into Class A play Friday night in a home against Browning, before hosting Cut Bank of Class B Saturday.
