A Havre Daily News reporter has earned top-level recognition for her piece about the rise - and then sharp fall - in cattle prices over the last few years.
Pam Burke received second place in the Inland Press Newsroom competition in the investigative reporting category. Inland Press Association is an organization of more than 1,000 newspapers in the United States, Canada and Bermuda.
Burke said it is the people who supply the information that make the stories work.
"One thing that has always made this job easier is the willingness of people to take time out of their day to share their knowledge, share their experience and their stories with us for our readers," she said. "Really, we would get nowhere without this generosity."
Havre Daily News publisher Stacy Mantle said she was pleased with the recognition.
"Pam does a great job getting the news out to our readers, and it is nice to see her get some recognition," Mantle said.
The article, "Market Decline, Many reasons could the cause of rise and fall of beef prices" published in the October 2016 Hi-Line Farm and Ranch produced by the Havre Daily News, included information from a variety of sources on topics ranging from allegations of price manipulation to local supply, niche marketing and the global cattle picture.
"As always, Pam did a great job of talking to the right people to find out what the information was and then turning it into an interesting, easy-to-read story," said Tim Leeds, managing editor of the Havre Daily. "I'm pleased that she got some recognition for her work."
