Local Boy Scouts earn Eagle Scout rank

Havre Daily News staff

Several local Boy Scouts have recently been awarded the highest rank possible in Boy Scouts of America.

Aarron Thompson of Troop 1438 was awarded his Eagle Scout rank Aug. 5 in a ceremony at First Lutheran Church in Havre; Xavier Hernandez, Joseph McCloud and Myles Steinmetz were awarded their Eagle Scout ranks Aug. 16 in a ceremony at Messiah Lutheran Church, and Kougar Lanier of Troop 1438 earned his Eagle Scout rank Aug. 19 at First Lutheran.

Boy Scouting, one of the traditional membership divisions of the Boy Scouts of America, is available to boys who have earned the Arrow of Light rank and are at least 10 years old or have completed the fifth grade and are at least 10, or who are 11, but not yet 18 years old, Boy Scouts of America's website says. The program achieves the BSA's objectives of developing character, citizenship and personal fitness.

To earn the Eagle Scout rank, the site says, scouts must be active in their troop, team, crew or ship for a period of at least six months after they have achieved the rank of Life Scout; demonstrate that they live by the principles of the Scout Oath and Scout Law in your their life; and earn a total of 21 merit badges, 10 more than they already have, including:

(a) First Aid, (b) Citizenship in the Community, (c) Citizenship in the Nation, (d) Citizenship in the World, (e) Communication, (f) Cooking, (g) Personal Fitness, (h) Emergency Preparedness or Lifesaving, (i) Environmental Science or Sustainability, (j) Personal Management, (k) Swimming or Hiking or Cycling, (l) Camping, and (m) Family Life.
