Volleyball is in Logan Huebsch' blood
When it comes to volleyball, Havre High senior Logan Huebsch has been around it pretty much all her life. But now, after playing the sport for as long as she can remember, she is getting ready to take part in her final season as a Blue Pony.
Huebsch has been around the game for so long, because her father, Bill Huebsch coached it for so long.both as a high school and college head coach. Her sister, Madison also played for the Ponies, while her younger sister Devyn Huebsch is in the HHS program with her now.
Yet, during her first three years at Havre High, Huebsch has made her own name athletically. She burst onto the scene as a freshman on the track team and participated in the 100 hurdles at the Class A state track meet. Huebsch is actually a three-time qualifier for the state track meet and this past season, she helped score points in three different events.
She placed individually for the first time in 2017 in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, finishing sixth in both events. She also helped the Havre girls 400-meter relay team finish sixth. But Huebsch said she has always enjoyed volleyball.
"I have been playing volleyball for a long time; I don't even know how long," Huebsch said. "I can remember playing around with the ball when I was little. But I like track, too. It probably just depends on the season."
Last season was the first for Huebsch on Havre's varsity roster and her first season didn't disappoint. She finished eighth in the Central A in terms of aces per set and also finished 10th overall with a total of 26.
Unfortunately, the Ponies struggled to get into the win column a year ago, which is something Huebsch and HHS are hoping to change this season. With head coach Tamecia Jarvis back for another year, along with a senior-laden roster, Havre is optimistic about the season to come.
But you never really know how good you are until you play someone else. The chance for the Ponies to do that will come this week, when HHS will travel to Glendive for the Eastern A Tip-Off Tournament. Havre will open group play at noon Friday, before taking part in a single-elimination tournament Saturday, which will be seeded based off how teams do in group play.
Huebsch and the Ponies have a long trip ahead of them, heading all the way to Glendive, but before hitting the road to start the season, the Havre Daily News caught up with the senior for five questions.
HDN: A lot of times parents think they know sports, but your dad really does know volleyball, so what has that been like?
Huebsch: "It's been really good. He is always good about telling me the things that I am doing well, but also telling things that I can work on. It's nice to have someone like that who can help me."
HDN: How excited are you guys for the upcoming season?
Huebsch: "We are pretty excited to see how the season goes and to see how far we will make it. We are pretty familiar playing with each other."
HDN: You said you guys are used to playing together and your coach has said you have good chemistry, how do you think that will help the team?
Huebsch: "I think that we have a good bond and there is not a lot of tension. It just makes playing together a lot more fun."
HDN: What is your goal for this season?
Huebsch: "Well if we could make it back to the state tournament, that would be awesome. Hopefully, we can get back in it."
HDN: What have you enjoyed the most about playing volleyball for Havre High these last few years?
Huebsch: "You get really close with everybody and you have special bonds with people, so it's nice and everyone is close and that just makes it all more fun."
