From Bullhook Blossoms Garden Club
Bullhook Blossoms Garden Club have selected this week's featured yard at 628 Fourth Ave. A first visit with owners Dave and Debi Rhines will quickly reveal their enthusiasm for gardening.
The craftsman bungalow house of 1913 is the backdrop for the artfully designed flower beds surrounding the wraparound porch that causes you to stop in time and enjoy the present. They have achieved a balance of perennials and annuals with a few volunteers here and there. Debi Rhines talks passionately about each flower that range from roses to hollyhocks and liatris to sedum The white picket fence appropriate for the vintage home defines the backyard and features a dogwood tree and private area for the family.
The Rhines have lived here since 1995 and raised their three children, who are now grown. However, the children's toys, including a swing set and bicycle, are still part of the yard decor and provide memories. In fact, antiques, bird houses, driftwood and iron art works enhance the flower beds throughout the corner lot. The Rhines are eco-friendly and beds are mulched for conservation.
The petite vegetable garden that is immaculately groomed is curb side on the south side of the corner lot and provides healthy veggies for the family. Vegetables include broccoli, potatoes, peppers, peas, squashes and others. Debi Rhines grows a few herbs for cooking and medicinal purposes and has chocolate mint as well as spearmint.
When you visit the yard pause a moment to enjoy the variety of flowers and the creative flower beds with art work. Absorb the ambience.
