Local Golf Report: Golf Camp is a good start to learning

From Tee to Green...

When you see Jordan Speith do the incredible things he did Sunday morning at Royal Birkdale, it sure does look easy. That's because Spieth is currently one of the greatest golfers on the planet right now.

But those of us who play the sport and who aren't in that category, we know it's not easy. It's not easy for us, and winning the Open Championship was not for Spieth, even if rolling in a 30-foot eagle putt looked that easy way.

No, Spieth got to where he is through hard work, dedication and desire to play the game. And somewhere along the line, he also got good at what he does thanks to forms of junior golf, in various categories.

So, when I see Doug Sheppard and Jimmy Kato putting on the Rotary Youth Golf Camp each year, my appreciation for what they do continues to grow. I run a youth tennis camp every summer, so I know what type of hard work and how much time goes into putting on such an event. And what I really appreciate about what the guys do for the Rotary Youth Camp is they do it to continue to help grow the sport they love. They do it to give youth golfers in the area a chance to fall in love with the game and go from there.

So, thanks to Doug and Jimmy for all they do for the Rotary Youth Golf Camp, which was held two weeks ago at Prairie Farms Golf Course. And to all of you kids who participated, you may not be Jordan Spieth yet, but it's a start.

Speaking of grass roots junior golf, former North Star Knight and Rocky Mountain College golfer Jordy Donoven finished an outstanding fifth at last weekend's 100th Montana State Amateur at Missoula Country Club. Donoven was tied for the lead after 18 holes and finished the 54-hole tourney with a one-under par 212. Donoven was one of just five golfers to finish the tournament under par. Well done Jordy.

Several ladies from Havre also played in the State Women's Senior Am last weekend at the Laurel Golf Club. Teresa Brown finished tied for 67th, while Patti Nault was T79 and Terry Lillevedt was 87th. Great job, ladies.

Women's league golf will also return this week after a one-week break.

Meanwhile, league golf is starting to hit the home stretch on the men's side.

Last Tuesday at Prairie Farms, Rock Solid, with Mike Kellam, Gary Stremcha and Roby and Jake Myers, as well as Korb Construction, with Kyle Miller, Scott (Butchy) Miller, Mike Erickson and myself tied for high team with 22.5 points. Scott Miller also fired a career-low 39 to earn low net with a whopping 26.5. Jeff Jensen was low gross with an even 36.

Last Wednesday saw Master Sports earn high-team honors with 23.5 points. The team was composed of Jim Kirkpatrick, Doug Sheppard, Dave Sheppard and Wayne Bolken. Kirkpatrick, Jimmy Kato and Dr. Kevin Harada tied for low gross, all shooting one under. Jerry Mellum was low net with a 31.

At Beaver Creek Golf Course last Thursday, CS&S Labs was high team with 21 points. Tim McLean, Cory Brothers, Jeff Brandon and Kare Engebretson made up the squad. Roman Surber shot even par to earn low gross, while Sam Cassel was low net with a 28.

On the local tournament scene, last weekend at BCGC, the Havre Endowment Brewfest Scramble was held, while next up out there will be the Swinging Sticks Scramble Aug. 3. Next up at Prairie Farms is the Northern Montana Hospital Foundation Scramble Aug. 5. For info on either tourney, contact the Pro Shops at Prairie Farms and BCGC.
