Heat exhaustion is the more mild form of heat-related
illness
Illness can develop after several days of exposure to high temperatures and inadequate or unbalanced replacement of fluids. Warning signs vary but may include the following:
• Heavy sweating
• Headache
• Paleness
• Nausea or vomiting
• Muscle Cramps
• Fainting
• Tiredness
• Skin is cool and moist
• Weakness
• Pulse rate is fast or weak
• Dizziness
• Breathing is fast and shallow
Heat stroke is the most-
serious heat-related illness
It occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature: the body’s temperature rises rapidly, the body loses its ability to sweat, and it is unable to cool down. Body temperatures rise to 106 degrees F or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not provided. Warning signs vary but may include the following:
• Body temp higher than 103 F
• Rapid strong pulse
• Throbbing headache
• Dizziness and nausea
• Skin red, hot and dry with no sweating
Seniors are at a greater risk for dehydration in this drastic heat without realizing it, so must remember to drink plenty of water frequently. Any indication of heat stroke is a medical emergency. Seek immediate medical attention.
