Flathers' color scheme earns Yard of the Week accolades

Located at the edge of Highland Park on the 1200 Block of Wilson Avenue, passersby can find a yard dressed this year and every year for the Fourth of July. Bullhook Blossoms Garden Club selected the yard, owned by Bruce and Marlys Flathers, as Yard of the Week for the week of Independence Day.

The patriotic color scheme is based on blue perennials enhanced with red, white and blue annuals. Hanging plants and large wooden flower barrels are showy and eye-catching from the street. The floral colors blend with the rustic house decor while the art and iron works mingled in the flower beds are both attractive and functional.

The unusual rain gutter on the northeast corner of the house and the homemade rope and limb ladder for climbing plants at the front entrance display both form and function.

Roses in the front and back yards are elegant and beautiful, while the many hostas tucked into shaded areas offer a restful appeal.

The yard reflects the owners' talents and hard work and serves as a respite to their busy lives as proprietors of the pizza restaurant The Pro.

They enjoy coming home to the sounds of water tumbling over the rocks in the homemade waterfall and crackling fire of the fire pit, relaxing in the hot tub or just sitting during a warm evening on the street side on the high table and chairs.

This yard is a labor of love for Bruce and Marlys and a work in progress. They have been gardening and adding to this show piece for over two decades.
