Baseball has always been considered the sport of summer, but anymore, softball is just as popular and Wednesday night at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field, one of the Havre Youth Softball girls fastpitch city championships was decided.
The A League City tournament, which started last week, decided its champion Wednesday as Seaberg Construction, which lost its opening game in the tournament, came all the way back to win the team title after beating Montana Country Boutique in back-to-back games for the championship.
MCB and Seaberg actually met in the opening game of the tournament and after a back-and-forth affair, it was MCB that came away victorious. But, since it was a true double-elimination tournament, Seaberg was able to come back through the loser's bracket and reach the title game.
However, that meant that Seaberg would need to beat MCB in consecutive games to take the crown and that's exactly what it did, winning the first championship game 10-5 and following that up with a 9-4 victory in the second game, which was winner take all.
A huge key for Seaberg Construction Wednesday, was the pitching of Sam Oliver, who pitched three straight games in order to help her team to the championship. The efforts of Katelyn Maloughney, who was the most valuable player of the A League tournament, were also vital to the cause.
The rest of the team sponsored by Seaberg Construction includes Sydney Wilting, Makayla Lindbloom, Sammy Lovenguth, Sierra Hofland, Morgan Flammond, Kobi Burchard and Jazmyn Doney. The team was coached by Eric Wilting and Lance Lindbloom.
While MCB was forced to settle for a runner-up finish, it was still a stellar way for the team to ends its season. MCB was coached by Tera Verploegen and Scott Gunderson. The roster of players includes Zephy Linton, Emery Davison, Katharine Greenwood, Abbey Morse, Tymarie Hewitt, Jera Verploegen, Cristen Friede, Mia Olsen, Allee Bartlett and Aleciah Mall.
While the A League tournament was certainly exciting, there will be more girls fastpitch championships decided tonight at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field as the B League girls fastpitch tournament will be decided tonight. The first title game is set for 7.
