From Tee to Green...
I know this past week ended with some pretty good golfing weather, but let's face it, we haven't exactly been blessed with ideal conditions so far this summer.
Mainly, it's been the wind. And while we all know full well Havre can be a very windy place, the month of June has been a little ridiculous. I did some checking, and as best I could find, the average daily high wind for June for Havre is around 11 mph. I kind of scoffed when I saw that because, most Havreites will say, 11 mph is flat calm.
After discovering the average for Havre's wind per day, I went back and looked at the last 15 days of June to get an average for what we've experienced. And what I found was, from June 10 to June 15, Havre averaged a daily top wind speed of 21 mph. Now, to some, that doesn't even seem that bad, but make no mistake, golf courses, for whatever reason, always seem to be windier than various locations around town. And that's not something that's a Havre thing. It doesn't matter if it's the latest PGA Tour stop or our courses right here in Havre, if the wind is blowing in town, you can bet it's blowing even harder on the course.
Of course, all this is just me whining a little bit because I know Mother Nature is someone who's going to do whatever she wants to and complaining about it daily does no good. Just ask my wife. From complaining and worrying about the weather during tennis season, to already griping about the wind every day this month, she's getting pretty sick of hearing about it, knowing full well we have no control over it.
Nevertheless, I truly hope July has some better golf conditions than June has had. Or as somebody else put it to me recently, Mother Nature just needs to turn the fan down to low, or off all together, even if it's just for a little while.
Speaking of things coming in July, one big event is the Rotary Youth Golf Camp. The camp runs July 5-7 and is open to boys and girls ages 9 and up. Call the Pro Shop at Prairie Farms Golf Course to sign up.
Prairie Farms and Beaver Creek Golf Course both started the second half of their men's league season last week.
Last Tuesday at Prairie Farms saw Bing-N-Bob's earn high-team honors with 21.5 points. Jeremy Jensen, Lunar Evans, C.J. Evans and Buzz Pizzini made up the squad. Jensen was low gross with a 1-under par 35, while Gene Kenney was low net with a 32.
Last Wednesday, Michelob Light was high team with 24 points. Jim Kato, Chad Spangler, Jim Heberly and Tom Baker made up the team. Kato was also low gross with a 39 and Al Vukasin was low net with a 29.5
Last Thursday saw the BCGC men and the Prairie Farms ladies battle some brutal conditions. In ladies league, D.A. Davidson was high team with 26.5 points. Patsy Divish, Karla Bolken, Mel Zuidema and Shari Baltrusch composed the team. Sarah Spangler was low gross with an excellent 38, and congrats to Havre Daily News publisher Stacy Mantle for earning low net with a 29.5.
At BCGC, Grip It n Sip It scored 24.5 points to earn high-team honors in the freezing conditions. Roman Surber fired a 1-over 37 to take low gross, while Tony Woods and Tim McLean tied for low net at 32.
