A local gardening club is dedicating two memorials in Havre to members of the military - past, present and future - and is inviting community members to the dedication.
Bullhoook Blossoms Gardening Club is dedicating Blue Star Markers that will be erected at Memorial Park on the 1100 Block of Fifth Avenue and at the Hill County Courthouse.
Blue Star Memorial Committee Co-Chairs Janice Brady and Gloria Tilleman and Bullhook Blossoms President Jody Olson and Past President Judy Ward said in an interview Wednesday that both memorials will be dedicated next Wednesday at Memorial Park at 2 p.m., with the larger memorial mounted on a post already set in concrete at the park and the smaller memorial to be installed at the courthouse.
The Blue Star Marker is a program by the National Garden Club Association, started by the New Jersey Garden Clubs in 1944 as a memorial to the service people who have served the United States.
It has spread across the nation, and Wednesday's ceremony will make Havre the 17th Montana community to install the memorials.
A representative of Sen. Steve Daines will be present to read a letter from the senator and Sen. Jon Tester and and Secretary of the Interior Ryan ZInke have been invited.
Gov. Steve Bullock and Lt. Gov. Mike Cooney have told the committee they will not be able to attend.
The committee members said Mrs. Montana Tana Johnson also will be at the ceremony.
Local military organizations including members of the Montana National Guard and the American Legion have been invited, as have been members of law enforcement and emergency responders.
Tim Maroney, deacon at St. Jude Thaddeus Church will give an invocation, and Veterans Honor Guard Member Call Burr will give the Pledge of Allegiance after members of the Havre High School band perform the Star Spangled Banner.
The agenda includes Linda Saddler, president of the Montana Garden Clubs, giving a history of the Blue Star Marker, Tilleman and Brady unveiling the markers and state Blue Star Marker Chair Kathy Austin dedicating them.
Havre Mayor Tim Solomon and Hill County Commissioner Mark Peterson will accept the markers with the band performing more music. American Legion Post 11 will lay a wreath, Maroney will give a benediction and "Taps" will be performed.
