Blue Pony girls score at state track meet

The Havre High track teams went to Laurel hoping to score some points and make an impact. Yet, after two days of competition, the Blue Ponies showed they still have room to grow before contending at the Class A state track meet.

The two day meet, which was held in Laurel began Friday and continued through to Saturday. When it was all said and done, Sidney won the boys team championship with 90 points. Dillon was second with 65 and Belgrade was third with 59. The girls team title went to Belgrade. The Panthers won the crown with 80 points. Corvallis came in second with 63.5 and Dillon was third with 57.5. The Havre girls scored three points to finish 17th, the boys team scored zero.

“I thought that all the kids that went down competed really hard,” HHS head coach John Ita. “I thought that our seniors did a great job of showing leadership. They did everything that we asked them to do.’

There were many Pony girls who finished in the top 10 and were at least in competition to place, but the only individual that found the podium for Havre was junior Logan Huebsch, who placed in both the 100-meter and 300 hurdles. Huebsch came in sixth in the 100 after posting a time of 17.21. She placed in the same spot in the 300 after running the race in 48.97.

The Pony girls also managed to earn a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter relay, as the team made up of Huebsch, Ireland Coyne, Katie Wirtzberger and Jessa Chvilicek ran the relay in 51.45.

“Logan, she had herself a really nice state meet,” Ita said. “She got herself up on the podium a couple times and also helped the 400-relay get on the podium, so she just had herself a really nice weekend, she really did.”

While the Pony girls only got two individuals up on the podium, a number came close and finished in the top 10 of their event, such as Wirtzberger, who finished ninth in the 200. Loni Waid also finished 10th in the pole vault and Caitlyn Terry was 10th in the long jump. Coyne also just missed placing in the 100 hurdles, winding up seventh, she was also 11th in the 300 hurdles. Chvilicek was 13th in the high jump and also competed on the long relay team, which finished eighth.

“Wirtzberger and Chvilicek, every once in awhile, they would come up to you and say ‘It’s just an honor to be here’ or ‘What a great experience,” Ita said. “They just have such great attitudes, and it was such a good experience for them. Every time you bring them to state, it can only help. I think we did have some disappointments, I was hoping for more from our jumpers. Caitlyn Terry PR’d and that was great to see, but if our high jumpers had jumped as well as they did all year, I think they would have scored points. They didn’t jump as well as they have all year these last two weeks, so they will need to get those nerves figured out, cause that’s that I think is causing it. But overall, I think that this team has a lot of potential and the girls especially have the chance to do some exciting things these next two years.”

The Havre boys competed in both relay races but fell short of finishing in the top six in both. The only individual competitor for the Pony boys was Jacob LaBrie, who wound up eighth in the 400.

“I thought that one of the highlights for me was the boys 1,600-relay team,” Ita said. “That group had never really run together and they went down there and got a PR, so that was really exciting to see.”
