Fort Benton wins 2nd straight Northern C

The Fort Benton girls have dominated the competition, pretty much wherever they have gone this season, and Thursday at the Northern C Divisional in Great Falls it was no different.

The Longhorns, who won the Northern C Divisional title a year ago, captured their second consecutive team title at the meet, finishing with 148 points, well ahead of second-place Chinook, which finished with 80. Belt was third with 68. As far as the boys meet was concerned, Belt took home the team title with 91 points, followed by Valier in second with 57 and Chester-Joplin-Inverness in third with 50.

Senior Coya Nack was a big reason for Fort Benton’s success Thursday as she won both the shot put (37-3) and the discus (107-2). Yet, she was far from the only Longhorn to capture a first-place prize.

Maddy Thompson, like Nack, won multiple events at the Northern C, capturing first in the pole vault with a height of 9-3, while also winning the long jump (16-2). Kaitlyn Bird, another Fort Benton senior also won both the 800-meter run and the 1,600 for the Longhorns, while also helping the 1,600-relay team capture first place as well. The Longhorns also won the 400-meter relay, which featured Nicole Axtman, who also won the long jump (33-1). Leah Gannon also had a solid day for the Longhorns, finishing third in the 200 and second in the 400. She also ran for both relay teams.

“We had basically everyone back (from last year),” Fort Benton head coach Kevin Shaw told the Great Falls Tribune. “Plus, Coya Nack moved over. I mean that was a huge addition for us. But everyone performed pretty well today. I think they had some real big goals this year, and I think coming back here and getting first was a big one.”

Fort Benton might have stolen the show, but the Chinook girls also had a solid day at the meet, thanks in large part to Megan Molyneux, who won both the 100 and 200. Kourtney Hanson was also second in the 800 and fifth in the 1,600 for the Sugarbeeters. Brooke Elliot was another key contributor for Chinook, getting second in the discus, third in the javelin and fifth in the shot put. Rochelle Chaffin also finished third in the triple jump and the 300-meter hurdles, as well as fifth in the 200.

In the boys meet, CJI was the top local team, as the Hawks ended up finishing third following a stellar day from Cory Richter. The senior placed in four events total and won two, the triple jump (41-2) and the long jump (20-1). He was also third in the high jump and third in the 100. His teammate, Cory Kelley also played a role, as he won the 110 hurdles for the Hawks.

North Star, which won the District 9C boys meet last week, was fourth in the Northern C with 38 points. Chinook was sixth with with 27, while other local schools also scored points. Turner had 20, Box Elder had 17, Fort Benton finished with 13 and Hays-Lodge Pole wound up with nine.

Eddie Harmon of Turner, who has put together a spectacular season, had another good day on the track, winning the 800 and finishing as the runner up in the 1,600. Trey Henderson of Box Elder was another top performer, as he finished second in the 400, fourth in the 200 and sixth in 100.

Dylan Miller of North Star led the way for his team, notching a second-place finish in the 200, followed by a third in the 400. Miller was also on a relay team that included Devon Miller, Caden Retting and Hayden Massar that took third in the 400. Rettig also finished fourth in the pole vault, while Dylan Miller was fifth in the same event.

Chinook also had some standouts on its way to fifth. Wade Schneider came through with a lot of points in the throws, finishing second in the shot put, third in the javelin and fourth in the discus. Kyler Johnson was also fourth in the 1,600 and the 3,200. Isiah Runs Above of HLP was also second in the 3,200, Jerel Anderson of Box Elder was fourth.

The Class C state track meet will be held in Laurel next Friday and Saturday.
