Havre runs, jumps and throws to a sweep

With one last home meet Saturday, both Havre High track teams ended their regular season in impressive fashion as the Blue Ponies now get set to prepare for the Eastern A Divisional meet.

However, before both Blue Pony teams start their two weeks of training for divisionals, they each took on North Star and Malta in the Havre Triangular at the Havre Middle School track Saturday.

In the girls competition, Havre dominated, winning the meet going away with 108 points. Malta finished with 30 and North Star scored 19. The boys side of things was much closer, but in the end, Havre was able to go out on top on senior day, edging out Malta for first with 62 points, compared to 57 for the Mustangs. North Star finished with 32.

"It's pretty special to have this last meet at home and to be honored," HHS senior Jacob LaBrie said. "Now we just want to keep getting better and do well at divisionals and hopefully we can do well at state."

LaBrie is among the most notable Havre seniors, and in his final home meet, he went out in style, winning the 400-meter run with a time of 54.06 and also running in both the 400 and 1,600-relay teams, which also took first place. The senior, who was part of the 1,600-relay team that won the Class A state championship a year ago, is hopeful, they can challenge again.

"We are going to compete as hard as we can," LaBrie said. "Hopefully, we can do really well at divisionals and state again."

The 1,600 relay team also featured Austin Jones, Martin Wilkie and Ethan Roberts. The winning time for the group was 4:03.7. The 400 relay team, which had Cole Watson and Brandon Shaw, joining LaBrie and Roberts, won with a time of 46.53.

HHS cruised in the relay events, but Roberts also finished first in the 100 (12.05) and 200 (24.37), with Watson finishing second in both. The Havre boys also continued to do well in the distance events, as Jones won the 800 (2:27) and the 1,600 (4:59), while Noah Azure won the 3,200 with a time of 13:05.

In the girls meet, Havre also did well in the sprints, as Tayler Marinkovich won the 100 (13.67) and Katie Wirtzberger won the 200 (27.44). Havre added another first-place showing in the 400 with Megan Whitford, who posted a winning time of 1:09.22 and in the 1,600 it was Kaylee Nystrom, who ended up with a time of 5:51 to win.

The Ponies also had a stellar day from junior Logan Huebsch, who won the 100 hurdles (16.31) and the 300 hurdles (49.43). Her teammate, Ireland Coyne, finished second in both races.

Like the boys team, the Havre girls won both relays. The 1,600 relay team posted a time of 4:35 and consisted of Huebsch, Coyne, Wirtzberger and Nystrom. The 400 relay team on the other hand, was made up of Coyne, Wirtzberger, Jessa Chvilicek and Marinkovich and won with a time a 51.36.

The Pony girls also had first-place showings from Sarah Faber in the long jump (14-11), Loni Waid in the pole vault (9-0), Chvilicek in the high jump (5-1), Amelia Beard in the triple jump (32-9.75) and senior Kristen Nash, who won the discus with a throw of 98-5, but also finished third in the shot put in her final home meet.

"We will be off this next week now preparing for divisionals," HHS head coach John Ita said. "We could go through a pretty rigorous training program, trying to make sure we do everything we can to get the kids ready."

Both Havre teams will take part in the Eastern A Divisional track meet, which will be held May 19-20 in Belgrade.
