The North/East Top 10 track meet is an annual stop for the top local tracksters in the area and today, the best of the best will head to Glasgow for the 2017 version.
The Top 10 meet features the 10 best athletes in each boys and girls event. The meet features athletes from Class A, Class B and Class C, all of whom had to quality previously in order to compete. The meet kicks off at approximately 3.
“The Top 10 is a pretty cool event,” HHS head coach John Ita said. “It’s different than most of our meets. It goes very quickly. You have 10 athletes in one event and that’s it. So it’s neat to see all those kids compete against each other and the atmosphere that you have there, is pretty special.”
In terms of the Havre girls, there will be 11 Blue Ponies competing as individuals, as well as others that will take part in the 1,600-meter and 400 relays. A number of Havre girls qualified in multiple events such as Logan Huebsch and Ireland Coyne, who each qualified for the 100 and 300 hurdles. Caitlyn Terry and Amelia Beard are two others that will compete twice individually, as they both made it into the long jump and triple jump.
The other Havre girls who will be seen at the Top 10 meet are Kristen Nash, who is the No. 1 seed in the discus, as well as Tayler Marinkovich (100), Katie Wirtzberger (200), Kaylee Nystrom (3,200), Sarah Faber (high jump), Jessa Chvilicek (high jump) and Loni Waid (pole vault).
The Chinook girls will also have a slew of athletes participating, led by Megan Molyneaux, who will run in both the 100 and the 200. Kourtney Hanson will take part in the 800, Rochelle Chaffin will be in the triple jump and Brooke Elliot qualified for the discus, shot put and javelin throws. Harlem will also send freshman L’Tia Lawrence to the meet to run in the 1,600 and the 3,200.
As far as the boys are concerned, Havre will have five different athletes taking part individually with Cole Watson in the 100, Jacob LaBrie in the 400, Jakob Keller in the 1,600, Austin Jones in the 3,200 and Andrew VandenBos in the 1,600. The Pony boys will also participate in the 1,600 relay.
While the Havre boys will have a chance to score some points, no local boys team may score more than Harlem, which will have four athletes in attendance that qualified for multiple events. One of those participating will be Reece Hutton, who is the No. 2 seed in both the discus and shot put. Damon Adams will also run in the 200 and the 400 for the Wildcats; Tyus Hammett will be in the high jump and the 110 hurdles and Taggert Devaney will compete in the 300 hurdles and the 800.
The Chinook boys will also be represented with Kyler Johnson in the 1,600 and 3,200, along with Trajan Hannum in the 800. Turner will also send Cody Welsh to compete in the 110 hurdles, as well as Eddie Harmon to run the 800.
