Sammy Evans racking up awards

Another track meet, more awards for former Havre Blue Pony Sammy Evans.

A former Havre High School standout and current University of Montana Grizzly, Evans has been named the Big Sky Conference Athlete of the Week for field events. This is the third time she's been honored by the league in her career.

Over the weekend, at the annual Griz-Cat dual Evans won both the long jump and triple jump. She was recognized for her mark of 41-8 in the triple jump, a season best. She ranks first in the Big Sky and 23rd in the NCAA West Region. Evans will advance to regionals next month in Austin, Texas, in the triple jump for the third time in her career.

Evans was also honored by UM, being named a recipent of the Grizzly Cup. The award was announced and presented to Evans and UM men's basketball standout Brandon Gfeller Tuesday night at the 25th annual Grizzly Athletics Scholar-Athlete Honors Banquet.

The Grizzly Cup, which has no defined list of criteria other than the recipients having excelled as student-athletes during their Montana careers, was first awarded in 1921 to three-sport athlete Larry Higbee.

Evans, of Havre, has been a five-year standout for the Montana track and field program. She has won five Big Sky Conference championships in the jumps — four in the triple, one in the long — and holds three school records.

Evans, who was named the Most Valuable Athlete at last spring's Big Sky outdoor championships at Greeley, Colorado, has twice advanced to NCAA outdoor regionals, in 2014 in the triple jump and in 2016 in the long and triple jumps. Evans will compete in the Montana Open Saturday in Missoula.
