Blue Ponies succeed in rough weather

Despite concerns about the weather, the Havre High tennis, track and softball team were all in action Tuesday across the state.

The Blue Pony softball team was looking to get back into the win column after losing twice to Belgrade last weekend and with a 15-0 win over Browning Tuesday night on the road, the Blue Ponies were able to do just that.

The Ponies shut out the Indians for the second time this season as the two teams met in Browning Tuesday. The game was cut short after four innings due to the mercy rule. Havre is now 3-3-1 on the season and is 2-3 in the Central A conference.

“We played a good offensive game,” HHS head coach Whitney McNally said. “The girls were very smart and very patient at the plate.”

In the first meeting between the two teams this season, Havre won 16-0 and Alex Barkus pitched a no hitter. This time around, the Indians managed one hit as Jaycelyn Hassa got the win after striking out three and allowing one hit in three innings. Barkus finished the game off in the fourth inning and struck out two.

Offensively, Havre scored three runs in the first inning, then added 10 in the second to jump out to a big lead and never looked back. The Ponies were led by Jacey McDonald, who reached safely three times in the game. She managed two hits, including a triple and notched two RBIs. Janae Boles, Hassa and Peyton Brown all contributed with two hits a piece as well in the victory.

The Ponies will have a few days off before taking on Livingston Saturday in doubleheader action between the two Central A rivals. The two schools will meet in Livingston for two games with the first pitch set to go out at noon.

While the softball team was in Browning, the track teams were in Malta to take part in the Malta Invitational. Both HHS teams fared well in the competition that featured 18 schools, finishing second in the boys competition and third in the girls meet.

Wolt Point won the boys title with 82 points. Havre was second with 76 and Harlem finished third with 68. Chinook won the girls crown with 102 points, edging out Malta, which finished with 101. The Havre girls were third with 77.

The boys team benefited from three different first-place finishes, including a top showing in the 1,600-meter relay. The team of Austin Jones, Jacob LaBrie, Jakob Keller and Martin Wilkie won the race with a time of 3:54.94. Jones also stood out in other events for Havre, winning the 800 (2:17) and coming in third in the 1,600. Noah Azure also won an event for the Ponies, winning, the 3,200 with a time of 11:57.

The girls team also had some solid performances led by jumpers Sarah Faber and Caitlyn Terry, who each finished second in the high jump and triple jumps respectively. Grace Loftus also had a stellar day, notching a third-place showing in the long jump and a fourth in the 200. Loni Waid was also second in the pole vault and Kristen Nash placed the same in the discus.

“I just can’t say enough about our distance kids,” HHS head coach John Ita said. “All of them ran really well, but I would have to say that was the highlight that and our 1,600-relay team. Our girls team did well, our jumpers did what they did. We competed on a dirt track, but even with that in mind, we had a lot of kids PR (personal record).”

The Blue Pony tennis teams weren't as fortunate with the weather. They were supposed to play three duals Tuesday in Great Falls. But rain allowed the Blue Ponies to play just nine completed matches.

Havre’s dual against Butte Central Tuesday morning was canceled, but the Ponies started their dual with CMR in the afternoon. On the boys side, the doubles teams of Jake Sedahl and Nate Korb, Trey Murphy and Kennedy McKay and Brady Ophus and Tommy Brown all won, while Trey Hanson was victorious at No. 2 singles. Bobby Personett and Jase Stokes, and the doubles team of Reece Bulkley and Jake Huston were also ahead in their matches when the rains came.

Against a tough CMR girls team, Havre dropped its first four matches, but freshman Cassidy Acor and the tandem of Baylee Miller and Megan Lindbloom were well ahead in their matches. Havre also had its dual with Great Falls High rained out.

“It was tough to not get in the matches we were looking for,” HHS head coach George Ferguson said. “The weather looked like it was going to be really good there for a while, but then the skies opened up and that was it. We started off well against CMR, and it would have been nice to see what we could do against Great Falls High. But that's tennis in Montana. It happens. So we'll go back to work and get ready for Glendive.”

The Blue Ponies go to the Glendive Invitational Friday and Saturday.
