Spring sports in Montana are always precarious, especially with the unpredictable weather.
So that means that while today could be a busy day in Have High sports, with the tennis and track teams, along with Blue Pony softball, all set to be in action today, rain is in the forecast, which could force it all to go by the wayside.
For starters, the Blue Pony tennis teams have already canceled their morning dual with Butte Central in Great Falls. But Havre is still hoping to get matches in with CMR and Great Falls High later this afternoon.
And tennis isn't the only thing going on today, as the HHS softball team will look to rebound from losses to Belgrade Saturday, with a Central A matchup against Browning tonight at 5:30. And lastly, the Havre track teams are slated to compete in the Malta Invitational, which is scheduled to start today at 3.
"That is the plan for right now," HHS head coach John Ita said. "But if we get rain, they don't have an all-purpose track, so it's just going to depend on the weather."
Malta, which runs its track meet on an old dirt track, would likely have to cancel the meet if there was poor weather. Also, due to the track, Ita said, most of his athletes will only participate in a couple events.
"We probably aren't going to push it too hard," Ita said. "We really want to do some other things and get some kids in different events, like we would love to get Logan Huebsch in an open 100 just to see her time, but it's not fair to have her do that on a dirt track, so that's not something we will do down there, although we would love to do it just to get that time and we will at some point."
While the track teams will look to continue to build toward next month and the end of the season, the Havre softball team (2-3-1), lost two games to Belgrade over the weekend and are now just 1-3 in the Central A. HHS can get to 2-3 with a win over the Indians, before closing the conference schedule with a game against Lewistown and a doubleheader against Livingston
In the first meeting against Browning, Havre dominated and won 16-0. Alex Barkus, the starting pitcher that day for the Ponies tossed a no hitter and could start again tonight. It will either be Barkus or Jaycelyn Hassa taking the bump for the Ponies.
"We just need to try and learn from our mistakes these past couple games," HHS head coach Whitney McNally said. "The girls are working hard and playing hard, so we just have to keep improving."
Like track and softball, Havre tennis has been busy and last Saturday, both Pony tennis squads dualed Central A rivals Lewistown and Livingston. The HHS boys won all three of their duals, knocking off Lewistown twice and Livingston once, while the Pony girls swept the Eagles and were beaten by the Rangers.
HHS will get another chance to rack up dual victories today with contests against CMR and Great Falls High. Both Havre teams will then head to the Glendive Invitational, which will be Friday and Saturday.
