HHS thinclads run in Cut bank Easter meet

The Havre High track team has been busy these past couple weeks, but with Easter on the horizon, the Blue Ponies have just one meet left, before getting a bit of a break.

Yet, before that much-needed break of almost 10 days comes, both Pony teams will head to Cut Bank today for the Pre-Easter Cut Bank Invitational. The meet will get underway this afternoon.

"Right now we just have a lot of tired legs and a lot of little injuries," HHS head coach John Ita said. "We don't have a lot of major stuff, but just some little aches and bruises and things that we need to take care of. So we are just going to try and get through this meet and then we will have a chance to get our legs back."

Havre will go head-to-head against a number of different teams from different classifications in Cut Bank, but because of having competed in three meets in a seven-day span just last week, many Havre athletes may just be doing one or two events.

"We are learning, but we are still really young," Ita said. "We don't have a lot of older kids. The kids we have are quality, but we don't have a lot of them to go around and make sure the younger kids are warming up and getting ready. When we are at practice, we are there to make sure they are doing all those things, at the meets we aren't. So we still have some things we need to learn, but that comes with experience."

Despite having a lot of youngsters on the girls team, its responding with some impressive performances. The Havre girls finished second at both the Cal Wearley Invitational and the Havre Lions Invite, which were last week in Havre.

One of the top performers thus far this season has been sophomore Sarah Faber, who has the second-best mark of any jumper among Class A girls track right now. She has placed in all three meets she has competed in this season.

However, Faber is far from the only consistent point producer for the HHS girls as junior Logan Huebsch has been outstanding in the hurdles. Ireland Coyne has also placed in the hurdle events multiple times this season, while Caitlyn Terry, Amelia Beard and Jessa Chvilicek have all been consistent in the jumps. Chvilicek has also done well in the sprints and the relays for HHS.

On the boys side of things, Havre will be looking for another solid meet from Jacob La-Brie, if he is able to go. He was injured in the 400 last Saturday. Distance runners Jakob Keller and Austin Jones have joined LaBrie as the top point getters from Havre, but others such as Tanner Parsons, Martin Wilkie and Cole Watson have shown promise in multiple events.

After competing in Cut Bank today, both Havre track teams will be off until April 22, when they will take part in the Belgrade Invitational.
