The Havre High track teams hosted around 20 schools Saturday at the Havre Middle School Track for the Lions Havre track meet and both Blue Ponies teams competed well at their first home meet of the season.
The HHS girls team didn’t win the team competition, but it came close, finishing second with 115 points. Fort Benton won the meet with 145 points. Lewistown was third with 94 and Chinook was fourth with 76. The Havre boys finished with 59 points. Cut Bank won running away with 134 points. Lewistown finished in second with 74.
“The girls did well,” HHS head coach John Ita said. “It was tough in the morning because the winds were really bad. But Sarah Faber, she had a PR in the high jump and Kristen Nash is consistently throwing over 100 feet. Logan Huebsch and Ireland Coyne both did well in the hurdles and looked a lot happier with their times. We are still a young team and we have a lot to learn, but this is going to be a salty group.”
Huebsch was undoubtedly the top performer for the girls team as she won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.6 and also finished second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.5. Ireland Coyne also finished third in the 100 hurdles for Havre.
Huebch and Coyne were also part of Havre’s 1,600-meter relay team that took first place after running a 4:22.2. The other members of that team were freshman Katie Wirtzberger and Jessa Chvilicek. Wirtzberger also performed well in the 400, finishing second with a time of 1:06 and the long jump, where she was third (14-7.5). Chvilicek placed third in the 100 and fifth in the high jump.
Sarah Faber also had an impressive day for the Ponies by winning the high jump after jumping 5-2. Other Havre girls did well in the jumps, such as Caitlyn Terry, who was third in the triple jump and fourth in long jump, as well as Amelia Beard, who was second in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump.
Loni Waid finished in a tie for first for Havre in the pole vault after notching an 8-6. Kristen Nash managed a second-place finish in the discus, while Jordan Keith finished fourth in the javelin and fifth in the shot put.
“The nice thing about our girls, is that we really have people in every event that can score points,” Ita said. “That way we don’t have to put someone like Logan Huebsch into five events. We don’t have to overload someone like that.”
On the boys side of things, Havre didn’t have anyone win an individual event, but HHS did have a couple of athletes come close, such as Jakob Keller, who finished second in the mile after running a 4:58.
“It was really cool to break five minutes,” Keller said. “That’s something that I have been working on for a while.”
Joining Keller in posting second-place finishes were Austin Jones, who came in second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 45.0 and Jacob LaBrie, who was second in the 400 with a time of 55.3. Jones also finished fifth in the 1,600.
Havre also got points in the pole vault from Mason Rismon, who was third in the event, along with Martin Wilkie, who finished fourth. Cole Watson also aided the effort for Havre in the 100-meter dash, placing fifth. Trevor Williams also fourth for the Ponies in the 3,200.
In addition to Havre athletes, some other local teams also put together impressive performances. Leah Gannon of Fort Benton won both the 400 and the long jump, while her teammate, Coya Nack, won the javelin and the discus. Kaitlin Bird also won 1,600 in the girls competition.
Chinook also had some girls take home individual titles as Megan Molyneaux won the 100 and the 200 for the Sugarbeeters. Kourtney Hanson won the 800 and the Beeters also won the 400-meter relay. In the boys meet, Cody Welsh won the 100 hurdles for Turner, while Trey Henderson won the 200 for Box Elder.
The Ponies will be back in action Thursday in Cut Bank for the pre-Easter track meet.
